FREIGHT SERVICES FOR SHIPPERS

Freight Shipping Built Around the Shipper

The shipper starts every freight move. You know what's on the dock, when it's ready and when it has to arrive. Get those details right, and the rest of the move falls into place. Get them wrong, and the freight waits.

AirFreight.com works for shippers. We take your details, choose the mode that fits the deadline and book the flight or truck. Production parts, retail stock, medical equipment and machinery all move through our team, by air and by road. One expediter manages each shipment to proof of delivery.

The details we need most are simple: pickup and delivery addresses, the ready time, piece count, weights, dimensions and the deadline. With those, we can tell you right away whether the freight should fly or drive. We can also tell you what time it will arrive.

Knowing your side of the job saves time on every booking. Here is what it involves and how to choose the right freight service.

AIR FREIGHT Icon of a plane flying over boxes

Same Day and Next Day Air Freight

Urgent boxes, crates and pallets fly on the first flight with space or a planned next-day flight. Trucks pick up at your dock and deliver at the other end. It is the fastest option for most long-distance freight. Your expediter confirms the cutoff and the recovery time before booking, so there are no surprises at the airport.

AIR CHARTER icon-air-charter

Dedicated Air Charter

When the load is large or no scheduled flight meets the deadline, a whole aircraft flies your freight direct. It leaves when your freight is ready, from the airport closest to your dock. Charter suits oversized pieces, full aircraft loads and freight bound for remote sites.

Expedited Trucking

A dedicated Sprinter van, box truck or hot shot drives your freight straight to the delivery dock. There are no terminals and no other shippers' cargo. On regional lanes it often beats a flight. Your freight stays on one vehicle from pickup to delivery, so there are no transfers that add handling or risk.

About 150 lbs is the line

Parcel networks commonly cap pieces near 150 lbs. Anything heavier moves as freight.

Parcel or freight Choosing the mode

Parcel or freight

While parcel service is cheaper for small boxes, freight service is often better for pallets, crates and heavy pieces. Parcel networks commonly cap pieces at about 150 pounds. Anything beyond that moves as freight.

Freight has several modes. LTL shares a trailer and moves through terminals. Full truckload puts one load on one truck. Expedited ground sends a dedicated van or truck straight to the dock, and air freight and air charter fly it.

On balance, size and urgency decide the mode more than habit does. That makes air the practical choice for urgent shipper freight over long distances. AirFreight.com arranges air freight, air charter and expedited ground.

Freight in numbers

Air cargo by the numbers

Trucks move most US freight value, logistics is a large share of the economy, and air carries a third of world trade by value.

Shipper duties Responsibilities

What the shipper must provide

Freight carriers usually rely on the shipper for the details, including accurate weights, dimensions and piece counts. This means a shipper has a smooth pickup whenever those details match the freight on the dock. Wrong numbers lead to reweighs, extra charges and missed flights.

The shipper also packages and palletizes the freight for handling and labels each piece. It prepares the bill of lading, or the air waybill details for air, and a packing list. Hazardous materials need proper declarations.

Our dispatch team is available around the clock, including weekends and holidays, so you can schedule pickup at any hour. AirFreight.com makes sure your details are confirmed before the truck arrives.

How it moves From quote to delivery

How a freight shipment moves

When a standard truckload isn't the right fit for your freight, an expedited move might be the answer. Every freight move follows the same path. It starts with a quote and booking, then pickup at the shipper's dock.

The line haul follows by truck or flight, with terminal or airport handling along the way. Final delivery and proof of delivery close the move, and the invoice follows. Delays and extra charges usually come from wrong weights, missed pickups or a closed dock at delivery.

And when a truck isn't the right solution, we also offer air freight and air charter for urgent freight. AirFreight.com manages each handoff and keeps you updated to delivery.

AirFreight.com specializes in expedited freight that gets urgent shipments moving and delivered to your dock. On the ground, a Sprinter van carries up to 3,000 pounds, and a hot shot carries up to 16,000 pounds. Box trucks and straight trucks fill the space between.

In the air, next flight out books the first departure with space. A hand carrier takes a small critical item on a passenger flight. An air charter flies a whole aircraft when the freight is large and the deadline is tight.

Why Cheap Freight Costs More: Mike Pettrey on Trust & Expedited Trucking

On this episode of On Air with AirFreight.com, host Kevin Carpenter sits down with Mike Pettrey, CEO of C&M Transport out of Painesville, Ohio — one of AirFreight.com's most trusted carrier partners and one of the oldest expedite companies in the country, now in its 35th year.

Mike shares how his father founded C&M around fair treatment of drivers and owner-operators, why straight trucks and sprinter vans became the backbone of the expedite industry, and how dedicated capacity mitigates cargo risk that traditional LTL can't. The conversation covers freight rate compression since 1991, the industry's price-driven race to the bottom, why regulatory crackdowns are (in their view) good for carriers who play it straight, and how technology — real-time tracking, proactive delay alerts — is raising the bar for customer transparency without replacing the human judgment calls that keep freight moving safely.

Shipper Freight Questions Answered

What is a shipper in freight?

A shipper in freight is the party that sends a shipment. The shipper owns or controls the freight at the start of the move, prepares it for transport and hands it to the carrier at pickup. Shippers can be manufacturers, distributors, retailers or any business with goods to move. The shipper is responsible for accurate weights and dimensions, proper packaging and labeling, and the shipping paperwork, such as the bill of lading. It also usually arranges and pays for the move, directly or through a freight broker. Most delays in shipper freight trace back to the dock, so getting these details right matters.

What is a consignee?

A consignee is the party that receives a shipment at its destination. The consignee is named on the bill of lading or air waybill, and the carrier delivers the freight to that party's address. At delivery, the consignee checks the freight against the paperwork, notes any visible damage or shortage on the delivery receipt and signs for it. In many shipments, the shipper and the consignee are the same company at two different locations, such as a factory sending parts to its own warehouse.

What is the difference between a shipper, carrier and freight broker?

A shipper sends the freight, a carrier moves it and a freight broker arranges the move. The carrier is a licensed company with trucks or aircraft that physically transports the shipment. The freight broker does not move the freight itself; it quotes the move, books a suitable carrier and manages the shipment for the shipper through to delivery. Shippers often work with a broker to reach more options without managing many carrier relationships, especially for urgent or unusual freight. For urgent shipper freight, a broker that covers both air and ground can compare flights and trucks in one quote.

What is a bill of lading?

A bill of lading is the main shipping document for a freight move. It lists the shipper, the consignee, the pickup and delivery addresses, the number of pieces, the weight, a description of the freight and any special handling. It works as a receipt when the carrier takes the freight and as a record of the terms of the move. The driver signs it at pickup, and the consignee signs it at delivery. For air freight, the air waybill plays a similar role.

What is a packing list?

A packing list is a document that details what is inside a shipment, piece by piece. It typically shows the contents, quantities, part numbers and the weight and dimensions of each package or pallet. The packing list travels with the freight, often attached to the outside in a sleeve, so the consignee can check what arrived against what was sent. It differs from the bill of lading, which covers the move itself. Packing lists are also needed for international shipments and customs.

When does a package become freight?

A package usually becomes freight when it exceeds parcel network limits, which commonly cap individual pieces at about 150 pounds and about 108 inches in length. Pallets, crates, long items and anything that needs a forklift or liftgate also move as freight, even if a single piece is lighter. Freight moves on trucks and aircraft suited to its size, with a bill of lading or air waybill instead of a parcel label. Freight is quoted differently too, based on weight, dimensions, distance and service level. Knowing the line between parcel and shipper freight helps a shipper book the right service the first time.

What is LTL?

LTL stands for less than truckload. It is a freight service in which several shippers share space on one trailer, with each paying for the space its freight uses. LTL freight moves through a network of terminals, where it is unloaded, sorted and reloaded onto other trucks heading toward its destination. This makes LTL economical for a few pallets that do not fill a truck, but slower than dedicated options. The extra handling also adds some risk of damage, so good packaging matters.

What is full truckload?

Full truckload is a freight service in which one shipper's freight fills, or reserves, an entire truck, usually a 53 foot dry van, a reefer or a flatbed. The truck goes straight from the pickup dock to the delivery dock with no terminal stops or transfers. That means less handling and faster transit than LTL. Full truckload makes sense for large shipments, often ten or more pallets, or for freight that needs to stay on one truck. Expedited truckload adds a second driver for faster delivery.

What is freight class?

Freight class is a standard classification used in LTL shipping to group freight by how easy it is to transport. It runs from class 50 to class 500 and is based on density, how easy the freight is to stow and handle, and its liability for damage or theft. Denser freight that is easy to handle usually falls into a lower class and costs less to ship. Freight class mainly applies to LTL, while full truckload, expedited ground and air freight are usually priced on weight, size and distance.

What is expedited freight?

Expedited freight is time-critical freight moved faster than standard service, usually on a dedicated vehicle or the first available flight. On the ground, it moves in Sprinter vans, box trucks, straight trucks or hot shot trucks that drive straight to the destination with no terminal stops. In the air, it moves by next flight out, hand carry or air charter. Shippers use expedited freight when a delay would stop a production line, miss a customer deadline or leave equipment out of service.

What is an air waybill?

An air waybill is the shipping document for an air freight move. It names the shipper and the consignee, lists the origin and destination airports, and records the number of pieces, the weight, the dimensions and a description of the goods. It serves as a receipt when the airline accepts the freight and as the contract for the move. Its number is used to track the shipment from tender to arrival. For shipper freight moving by air, accurate details on the air waybill keep screening and acceptance on schedule and avoid delays at the airport.
