SAME DAY FREIGHT SERVICES

Same Day Freight, by Air or by Road

A same day request usually means something has already gone wrong. A part failed, an order was missed or a shipment didn't show. Now the freight has to be picked up and delivered before the day ends.

AirFreight.com dispatches a dedicated vehicle for regional runs and books the first flight that can deliver today for longer ones. We handle the trucks at both ends, and you get updates until the freight is signed for.

Distance decides the mode. Within a few hundred miles, a van or truck that leaves right away usually wins. Beyond that, a flight with trucks at both ends can still deliver the same day. That holds if the freight is ready early enough to make a departure.

Here is how far same day can reach and how to choose the right option.

Same Day Air Freight

Over longer distances, freight flies on the first flight that can deliver today. Trucks collect it at your dock and deliver it on arrival. Your expediter checks the cutoff and books the trucks around the flight, so nothing waits at the airport.

HAND CARRY EF Icon

Same Day Hand Carry

A courier flies a small critical item on the next passenger flight and delivers it in person, often across the country in a single day. It never sits in a cargo terminal, which makes it the most reliable same day option for small items.

Picked up and delivered today

A dedicated vehicle or the first suitable flight gets the freight there the same day.

Same day freight Definition

What same day freight means

Same day freight means the shipment is collected and delivered on the same day.

On regional runs, a dedicated vehicle drives it directly from your dock to the destination. Over longer distances, the first flight that can deliver today carries it, with trucks at both ends. Unlike parcel same-day services, freight options take pallets and heavier pieces.

AirFreight.com arranges both, from a few boxes to several pallets. Every shipment is monitored from pickup to delivery.

Same day options

Same day ground, same day air, next flight out or next day

The right option depends on distance and deadline. AirFreight.com arranges all four and picks the one that gets your freight there in time.

Summarized for US domestic freight; same-day reach depends on ready time and flight schedules.

Rule of thumb

Ready earlier, reach farther

Trucks cover regional distances in a day. Same day air crosses the country.

Reach How far it goes

How far same day can reach

Skip the guesswork by starting with the ready time and the distance. We plan the route around both, by road or by air. A dedicated vehicle can cover regional distances in a day, limited by drive time, driver hours and traffic.

Beyond that range, same day air uses scheduled flights, so freight can cross the country and still arrive today. Ready time matters most: the earlier the freight is ready, the farther it can go. Freight that is ready late in the afternoon may need next flight out for an early-morning delivery instead.

AirFreight.com matches the route to your ready time and deadline. Your shipment stays with one expediter from pickup to delivery.

An idle plant can cost a fortune by the hour, and much of the economy's freight moves by truck. These figures show why same day freight exists.

The freight picks the vehicle

Weight, size and dock access decide whether a van, box truck or hot shot is sent.

Vehicles Choosing the vehicle

Choosing the same day vehicle

Whether your priority is a box of parts, a few pallets or a long piece of equipment, a dedicated vehicle remains one of the most reliable ways to move it. A Sprinter van carries up to 3,000 pounds, enough for boxes and a pallet or two. A box truck carries up to 5,000 pounds and often has a liftgate.

A straight truck carries up to 9,000 pounds of palletized freight. A hot shot carries up to 16,000 pounds, which suits heavy or long items. If the delivery site has no dock, a liftgate lowers the freight to the ground.

Our dispatch team is available around the clock, including weekends and holidays, so you can book a vehicle at any hour. AirFreight.com makes sure the vehicle fits your freight before it is dispatched.

What slows same day

Late ready times, missing details and sites with no dock or liftgate.

Timing After you book

The hours after you book

The first hour after a call decides more of a same day delivery than any other, more than the drive itself. The call brings the details, and the nearest suitable vehicle is dispatched or the flight is booked. Pickup follows, then the direct drive or the flight with updates along the way.

The freight is delivered, and proof of delivery closes the move. Late ready times, missing details and sites with no dock or liftgate are what usually slow a same day shipment down.

We identify those issues on the first call, so nothing stops the vehicle once it is rolling. AirFreight.com coordinates every step and keeps you updated until the freight is delivered.

Same day air By air

Same day air in detail

While a dedicated truck is better on regional runs, same day air is often better for freight going across the country. Counter-to-counter service uses passenger flights for small, urgent boxes, with the freight dropped at one airline counter and collected at the other. Door-to-door service adds trucks at both ends.

For a small critical item, hand carry is also far more practical than shipping it as freight. Next flight out takes over when same-day delivery is not possible but tomorrow morning is. Parcel same-day services suit small packages, while freight options suit pallets and heavier pieces.

This makes same day air a practical alternative to driving when the distance is too long for the deadline. AirFreight.com books the flight and coordinates the trucks at both ends.

How Supreme Court Ruling Is Reshaping Final Mile Risk Management

In this episode of On Air with Airfreight.com, host Kevin Carpenter sits down with Bryan Ice, a certified insurance counselor and co-founder of B3, a specialized insurance and risk management program built for final mile, same-day, courier, and customized delivery.

Bryan shares how B3 got its start, why final mile has always been a misunderstood niche for insurers, and what the recent Supreme Court ruling in Montgomery v. Carib Transport means for freight brokers and motor carriers going forward. We also get into how COVID reshaped final mile delivery for good, why thin-margin operators are headed for trouble, and how B3 is building a driver grading system to raise the bar on vetting.

Same Day Freight Questions Answered

What is same day freight?

Same day freight is a shipment that is picked up and delivered on the same day. On regional runs, it usually moves in a dedicated vehicle that drives directly from pickup to delivery without other stops. Over longer distances, it moves on the first flight that can deliver it that day, with trucks or couriers at both ends. Same day freight differs from parcel same-day services because it can handle pallets, crates and heavier pieces, not only small packages. It is used for production parts, medical supplies, trade show freight and anything else that cannot wait until tomorrow.

What is same day air?

Same day air is a service that delivers a shipment on the day it ships by putting it on scheduled flights that can reach the destination in time. It often works counter to counter, with the freight dropped at an airline's cargo counter and collected at the destination counter, or door to door with trucks at both ends. Same day air extends same-day delivery far beyond driving range. Whether it is possible depends on how early the freight is ready, the flight schedules between the two cities and the size of the shipment.

What is counter-to-counter air freight?

Counter-to-counter is an air service where a shipment is dropped off at an airline's cargo counter at one airport and collected at the counter at the destination airport. It usually uses passenger flights, which depart frequently, so small urgent boxes can move the same day. The shipper or a courier handles the drive to and from each airport. Size and weight limits are tighter than for standard air freight because the freight rides in passenger aircraft holds. It suits small parts, documents and samples on very tight deadlines.

What is the difference between same day air and next flight out?

Same day air aims to deliver a shipment on the same day it ships, using flights that can reach the destination in time for delivery that day. Next flight out books the shipment on the first departure with space, which may deliver the same day or, if the freight is ready later, late that night or early the next morning. In practice, next flight out is the fallback when same-day delivery is not possible but tomorrow morning still meets the deadline. Both use trucks or couriers at each end.

What is a dedicated vehicle?

A dedicated vehicle is a van or truck assigned to one shipment for the whole trip. The driver picks up the freight and drives straight to the destination without carrying anything else or stopping at terminals. Dedicated vehicles are the standard way to move same day freight on regional runs. They reduce handling, which lowers the risk of damage, and they remove the waiting that comes with shared routes. The vehicle size is chosen to fit the freight, from a cargo van for boxes to a hot shot for heavy items.

What is a liftgate?

A liftgate is a powered platform at the back of a truck that raises and lowers freight between the ground and the truck bed. It is needed when the pickup or delivery site has no loading dock or forklift, such as many offices, stores and job sites. Box trucks and straight trucks often have liftgates. When booking same day freight, it helps to say whether each site has a dock, so the right vehicle is dispatched the first time. Liftgates have weight limits, so very heavy pieces may need a forklift at the site.

What is a Sprinter van used for?

A Sprinter van, or high-roof cargo van, carries boxes, parts, samples and a pallet or two, up to about 3,000 pounds. It is quick to dispatch and easy to drive in city traffic and into tight docks and job sites. For same day freight, Sprinter vans are often the fastest option for small loads on regional runs, because they can leave as soon as the freight is ready and drive straight to the destination. Larger loads move up to a box truck, a straight truck or a hot shot.

What is proof of delivery?

Proof of delivery is the record that confirms a shipment arrived. It usually includes the name of the person who received the freight, the date and time, and often a signature, photo or notes about the freight's condition. For same day freight, proof of delivery is usually sent right after delivery so the shipper knows the job is done. It also protects both sides if there is a question later. Any damage or missing pieces should be noted on the delivery paperwork at the moment of delivery to support a claim.

What is exclusive-use delivery?

Exclusive-use delivery means one shipper reserves the entire vehicle for its shipment. No other freight is loaded, and the vehicle travels straight from pickup to delivery. It costs more than shared delivery because the shipper pays for the whole vehicle, but it is the fastest and most direct way to move freight by road. Exclusive use also reduces handling, which matters for fragile or high-value goods. Most same day freight on regional runs moves on an exclusive-use basis for exactly these reasons.

What is hot shot trucking?

Hot shot trucking uses a heavy-duty pickup truck pulling a flatbed or gooseneck trailer to move urgent freight directly from pickup to delivery. Hot shots carry up to 16,000 pounds and are well suited to heavy or long items such as equipment, machinery parts and construction materials. They dispatch quickly, which makes them a common choice for same day freight that is too heavy or awkward for a van or box truck. Because the trailer is open, freight may need tarping or other protection from weather.

Can same day freight run on weekends and holidays?

Yes. Same day freight is often needed outside normal business hours, when a line goes down, a part fails or a deadline moves. Dedicated vehicles can run on weekends and holidays, and many airlines fly cargo every day. The main limits are at the delivery end: the receiving site must be open and someone must be there to sign for the freight. Arranging a contact on site and confirming dock access ahead of time is the key to a smooth weekend or holiday delivery.
