In short

Freight that cannot wait

It is booked on a flight, not waitlisted.

The term What it means

What priority cargo means

Priority cargo is a general freight term for shipments that are given precedence for space and handling. This page explains the term, not any company with priority in its name. Instead of waiting for space to open up, it is booked on a specific flight, usually the first suitable one, and handled so it makes that flight.

Shippers choose priority when the cost of a delay is higher than the cost of moving the freight faster. A part that keeps a production line or an aircraft running, a medical device a patient is waiting for, or equipment a crew needs tomorrow all fall into this group.

Priority freight also moves on the ground. When the distance is short enough, a dedicated truck driven straight to the receiver can be just as fast. AirFreight.com arranges both.

Cargo freighter aircraft
The point

A confirmed flight, not a wait

Priority freight is planned around one departure.

Priority vs standard Priority or standard

Priority or standard cargo

Standard air cargo moves when space allows. It is booked on a route, and if a flight is full it may wait for a later one, which is fine when the freight has a few days to spare. It usually costs less for that reason.

Priority freight is booked on a specific flight and accepted for that departure, so it does not wait in line for space. At the destination it is recovered once it is released and delivered right away, rather than held for a scheduled run. Because the freight is planned around one departure, the pickup is timed to reach the airport before the cargo cutoff.

The difference is not in the aircraft but in the plan: priority freight has a confirmed flight and a schedule built around the deadline.

The upshot

When waiting costs more

A fixed deadline makes freight priority.

Industries Who ships it

Who ships priority cargo

Aerospace is one of the most frequent users of priority freight. When an aircraft is grounded for a part, known as aircraft on ground, every hour costs money, and the replacement is flown on the first flight or hand carried. Manufacturers ship parts this way when a missing part stops a production line.

Hospitals and medical suppliers send equipment, devices and supplies that patients are waiting for. Energy companies rush pumps, valves and parts to sites where a shutdown is costly. Film and entertainment crews ship cameras and equipment to shoots on tight schedules, and trade show teams send exhibits that must arrive before the doors open.

What these shipments share is a deadline that cannot move, and a cost of waiting that is far higher than the cost of shipping fast. AirFreight.com arranges priority shipments for each of these industries, by air or by dedicated truck.

The rule

The deadline sets the option

Start with when it must arrive.

Transit time How long it takes

How long it takes

How long air shipping takes depends on the service and the route. Priority domestic freight often moves the same day or the next day, from pickup to delivery, when it books the first suitable flight. Standard air cargo often takes a few days, since it moves as space allows.

A few things shape the time. Flight schedules set when freight can leave, and the cargo cutoff sets how early it must reach the airport. Distance from pickup and delivery to the nearest airports adds truck time at both ends. Large or heavy freight may need a freighter or charter, which can change the timing.

The deadline is the best place to start. Sharing it up front lets AirFreight.com pick the option that meets it, whether that is a scheduled flight, a courier or a charter.

Priority shipping

A priority shipment, step by step

A typical priority air shipment follows six steps. AirFreight.com handles each of them, so the freight stays on one plan from pickup to delivery.

  1. 01

    Share the deadline

The shipper shares what the freight is, its weight and size, both addresses and when it must arrive.

    • Details
  2. 02

    Choose the option

  3. 03

    Book the flight

Space is booked on a specific flight, and the pickup is timed so the freight reaches the airport before the cutoff.

    • Booking
  4. 04

    Pick up and tender

A truck collects the freight and delivers it to the airline's cargo terminal, where it is accepted for the flight.

  5. 05

    Track the flight

The shipment is followed through the flight, with updates shared and any delay flagged early.

  6. 06

    Recover and deliver

A recovery truck collects the freight once it is released and delivers it to the door, with proof of delivery.

The upshot

One plan for urgent freight

The trucks matter as much as the flight.

Shipping it One plan

Shipping priority cargo

It starts with the deadline and the freight. Small, critical items often suit a courier on board, who stays with them the whole way. Boxes, pallets and crates suit the next flight out. Large or heavy freight, or routes with no suitable flight in time, may need a charter. For shorter distances, a dedicated truck can be the quickest choice.

Whatever the option, the trucks at both ends matter as much as the flight. One plan, with one person following the shipment, keeps the pickup, tender, flight and recovery in step.

AirFreight.com arranges priority freight this way, from the first call to proof of delivery. Have ready the freight details, both addresses, contacts at each end and the deadline, and the right option follows from there.

First time customer

First time customer. Communication was fantastic throughout the entire process and is sincerely appreciated. Our customer shared an update this morning that the driver texted a little before 5 am that he would be there at 8. That’s exactly when he pulled in. She said it was a much easier process than she ever thought it would be and was very grateful.

Zero problems, ahead of schedule

My only criticism is that there isn’t an option for more than five stars. I’ve been burned by more hotshot brokers than I can count, and this is the first time I’ve had a shipment show up ahead of schedule with absolutely zero damage or tampering. I could not recommend AirFreight more strongly, we will be using them exclusively going forward. A bit higher priced but frankly inexpensive compared to the problems caused by prior shippers. 11/10, no notes.

Priority Cargo Questions Answered

What is priority cargo?

Priority cargo is freight that is given precedence for space and handling, so it is booked on a specific flight, usually the first suitable one, instead of waiting for space as standard cargo. Shippers use it when a delay would cost more than moving the freight faster. It can also move by dedicated truck when the distance is short enough. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later.

What is priority freight shipping?

Priority freight shipping is a faster service level for freight with a firm deadline. The shipment is booked on a specific flight or dispatched on a dedicated truck, and the pickup, transport and delivery are planned around when it must arrive. It is commonly used for aircraft parts, production parts, medical supplies and equipment needed on a tight schedule. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly.

How is priority cargo different from standard air cargo?

Standard air cargo moves when space allows and may wait for a later flight if one is full, which is why it usually costs less. Priority freight is booked on a specific flight and accepted for that departure, so it does not wait for space. The pickup is timed to the cutoff, and the freight is recovered and delivered as soon as it is released. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays.

How many days is air shipping?

Air shipping time depends on the service and the route. Priority domestic freight often moves the same day or the next day when it books the first suitable flight. Standard air cargo often takes a few days because it moves as space allows. International shipments usually take longer, and the distance between the airports and the pickup and delivery addresses also affects timing. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment.

What kinds of shipments go as priority freight?

These shipments usually have a deadline that cannot move. Common examples include aircraft parts for a grounded aircraft, parts that keep a production line running, medical devices and supplies, critical documents, cameras and equipment for a shoot, and exhibits for a trade show. The common thread is that waiting would cost more than shipping fast. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later.

Which industries ship priority cargo?

Many industries rely on it. Aerospace companies send parts to grounded aircraft. Manufacturers ship parts to keep production running. Hospitals and medical suppliers send equipment and supplies. Energy companies rush parts to sites facing a shutdown. Film and entertainment crews ship equipment to shoots, and trade show teams send exhibits that must arrive before an event opens. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly.

Is priority freight a real service level?

Yes, priority freight is a common service level in air cargo and trucking. It means the shipment is planned around a firm deadline, booked on a specific flight or a dedicated truck rather than waiting for space. When booking, it helps to ask what the service includes, such as which flight the freight is booked on, how it gets to and from the airport and how updates are shared. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays.

What is the fastest way to ship priority cargo?

The fastest option depends on its size and the distance. Over long distances, an air charter is often fastest for large loads because it leaves when the freight is ready, and a courier on board is fastest for small items. The next flight out suits boxes and pallets. Over shorter distances, a dedicated truck driven direct can be just as quick. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment.

Can priority freight go by truck?

Yes, urgent freight can go by truck when the distance is short enough. A dedicated truck, such as a Sprinter van, straight truck or hot shot, is dispatched for that load alone and driven straight to the receiver, with no transfers. For regional runs it can match or beat air once airport time is counted, and it suits freight too large for a courier. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later.

How do I ship priority cargo?

To ship it, share what the freight is, the number of pieces, the weight and dimensions, how it is packed, the pickup and delivery addresses, the contacts at each end and the deadline. A provider then picks the option that meets the deadline, whether a scheduled flight, a courier, a charter or a truck, and arranges the trucks at both ends. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly.
