Freight Shipping Quotes

Most freight quote forms give you a number and nothing behind it. AirFreight.com quotes air freight first, from next flight out to a dedicated charter, and urgent trucking when the road is the better fit. One expeditor explains what the price covers and books the option you choose.

FREIGHT QUOTES

Freight Quotes You Can Actually Compare

Two freight quotes for the same shipment can be far apart and still not cover the same trip. One includes pickup and delivery. The other stops at the airport. A third assumes a ready time you can't meet.

We quote the way the shipment will actually move. Send the pickup and delivery details, the pieces and the deadline, and an expeditor prices the options that can make it, from next flight out to a charter or a dedicated truck. Every price covers the full trip, so you can compare them side by side.

A complete freight quote lists more than a rate. It shows the pickup and delivery charges, the service level, the ready time it assumes and the arrival time it promises. When two quotes show the same things, you can compare them fairly.

Here is what goes into a freight quote and how to read one.

Air Freight Quotes

Next flight out and next-day air for boxes, crates and pallets, quoted door to door. The trucks at both ends are part of the price. We include the cutoff and the expected delivery time, so you know what you are paying for.

Air Charter Quotes

When no scheduled flight fits, we quote a dedicated aircraft sized to your load. The ground legs at each end are included. Positioning, landing fees and handling are part of the price, so the number holds.

URGENT TRUCKING Icon of a truck

Expedited Trucking Quotes

Sprinter vans, box trucks and hot shots run straight to the dock on shorter lanes. When a truck beats a plane, we'll quote it. On many regional lanes, a dedicated truck costs less than a flight and arrives just as fast.

Why it matters

Compare the same trip

An airport or terminal rate can look lower because the trucking at each end is missing.

Freight quotes What they cover

What freight shipping quotes actually cover

A freight rate is the price to move one shipment between two points by one service. A door-to-door quote includes pickup at your dock, the line haul or the flight, and delivery at the other end. A terminal or airport rate covers only the middle leg, so the trucking at each end is yours to arrange.

Every quote is tied to the details you give: weight, dimensions, pickup time and deadline. Door-to-door pricing is also the fairest way to compare offers, because every price covers the same trip. AirFreight.com quotes every shipment this way.

Aircraft being loaded with cargo
Rule of thumb

Start with the deadline

The deadline and the distance together usually decide between a truck and a plane.

Choosing a service Which fits

Matching the service to your shipment

AirFreight.com specializes in freight that has to move now, by air first and by road when that fits better. The service you choose sets the shape of your quote.

A small critical part can travel with a hand carrier. Boxes and a few pallets can take the next flight out, with trucks at both ends. On shorter runs, an expedited van or truck drives straight through, and a hot shot or full trailer takes heavy and large loads. When no scheduled flight works, a dedicated charter takes the whole aircraft.

Moving to a dedicated truck or a flight removes the terminal stops of shared freight, which shortens transit and cuts handling. Your shipment stays with one expeditor from the quote to final delivery.

Good to know

Urgency outweighs distance by air

On an urgent flight, how soon you need it often moves the price more than the miles.

Cost drivers What drives price

What moves the number on any quote

From one crate on a passenger flight to a pallet on a truck to a full charter, we quote freight across the US and Canada. Every one of those quotes is built from the same few drivers.

Distance and lane usually come first, followed by weight and size. The service level and how soon you need it shape the price next. Conditions at pickup and delivery matter too, such as a dock or a liftgate. Special handling for hazardous materials and the price of fuel also count. Air cargo is priced mostly on urgency and space, while trucks are priced on distance and equipment.

AirFreight.com gives you direct access to scheduled flights, charter aircraft and expedited trucks, backed by dispatch around the clock. Every shipment is monitored from pickup to drop-off.

Airplane in flight
Air or ground

Long and hard deadline? Fly.

Shorter runs and oversized freight usually go faster by expedited truck.

Air or ground

When air freight is worth the quote

As soon as you request a quote, you'll be connected with an expeditor who will weigh air against ground for your shipment. The answer depends on distance, deadline and what the freight is worth to you.

A scheduled flight or a charter wins when the distance is long and the deadline is hard. It also wins when a stopped line or a high-value part makes waiting expensive. An expedited truck is often faster door to door on shorter runs, and it carries freight too large for an aircraft door. When the date is flexible, standard LTL is usually enough.

AirFreight.com arranges both flights and urgent trucking, so the recommendation follows your shipment instead of a single mode. You'll work one-on-one with that expeditor from the quote to final delivery. Tell us what you need to move, and we'll handle the rest.

Why Cheap Freight Costs More: Mike Pettrey on Trust & Expedited Trucking

On this episode of On Air with AirFreight.com, host Kevin Carpenter sits down with Mike Pettrey, CEO of C&M Transport out of Painesville, Ohio — one of AirFreight.com's most trusted carrier partners and one of the oldest expedite companies in the country, now in its 35th year.

Mike shares how his father founded C&M around fair treatment of drivers and owner-operators, why straight trucks and sprinter vans became the backbone of the expedite industry, and how dedicated capacity mitigates cargo risk that traditional LTL can't. The conversation covers freight rate compression since 1991, the industry's price-driven race to the bottom, why regulatory crackdowns are (in their view) good for carriers who play it straight, and how technology — real-time tracking, proactive delay alerts — is raising the bar for customer transparency without replacing the human judgment calls that keep freight moving safely.

Heavy boxes are hit hardest

The minimum billable weight for packages that need additional handling rises from 40 pounds to 50 pounds. Analysts say the headline average understates the effect for many shippers.

First time customer

First time customer. Communication was fantastic throughout the entire process and is sincerely appreciated. Our customer shared an update this morning that the driver texted a little before 5 am that he would be there at 8. That’s exactly when he pulled in. She said it was a much easier process than she ever thought it would be and was very grateful.

Glad I don't need all the time, but when I do...

AirFreight handled my unusual situation (my perspective) seamlessly. In response to my first call for assistance, a professional (kind, even) HUMAN answered immediately. From there, communication at every stage was clear and thorough. AirFreight is an example of how a service operation is supposed to work.

Zero problems, ahead of schedule

My only criticism is that there isn’t an option for more than five stars. I’ve been burned by more hotshot brokers than I can count, and this is the first time I’ve had a shipment show up ahead of schedule with absolutely zero damage or tampering. I could not recommend AirFreight more strongly, we will be using them exclusively going forward. A bit higher priced but frankly inexpensive compared to the problems caused by prior shippers. 11/10, no notes.

HowWe Work

One Person, Start to Finish

When you ask AirFreight.com for a freight quote, a real person answers right away. That expeditor prepares the quote, books the flight, charter or truck and owns the shipment until it is delivered. Your quote never goes into a queue for someone else to book. If something changes at pickup, the person who quoted it is the one who calls you.

  • The expeditor who quotes it books it
  • Updates at pickup, wheels-up, wheels-down and delivery
  • The same person on your next quote

Questions About Freight Shipping Quotes

What is a freight rate?

A freight rate is the price a carrier or broker charges to move one shipment between two points by one service. It reflects the distance and lane, the billed weight, the service level and the conditions at pickup and delivery. A door-to-door rate covers the whole trip, including pickup, the line haul or flight, and final delivery. A terminal or airport rate covers only the middle leg. Rates also change with the market, because fuel prices, capacity and seasonal demand all move. That is why a freight rate is quoted for a specific shipment on a specific date, rather than published as a fixed price. The more accurate the details behind it, the more reliable the rate.

What is the difference between freight and parcel shipping?

Parcel shipping moves individual boxes through a carrier's sorting network, with a label on each box and automated hubs along the way. Parcel networks are built for packages one person can lift, and they charge more as boxes get heavier or bulkier. Freight covers anything larger: palletized goods, crates, machinery and shipments that need a forklift. It moves on trucks, in aircraft holds or on charters, usually under one bill of lading or air waybill for the whole shipment. A single box of 40 or 50 pounds usually ships cheapest by parcel. Several heavy boxes, anything on a pallet, or a shipment with a hard deadline is usually better quoted as freight.

What is LTL freight?

LTL stands for less than truckload. It is freight that shares a trailer with shipments from other shippers, usually one to several pallets that do not fill a truck on their own. LTL carriers collect freight from many pickups, sort it at terminals and deliver it on scheduled routes. That network keeps the cost down for smaller shipments, but each terminal stop adds handling and time. LTL is priced on freight class, weight, distance and the conditions at pickup and delivery. It works well for planned freight with a flexible delivery date. For urgent freight, an expedited truck or a flight avoids the terminal stops altogether.

What is freight class?

Freight class is a standard rating used to price LTL shipments in the United States. It runs from Class 50 for dense, durable freight up to Class 500 for very light, bulky freight. The class is set mainly by density, along with how easy the freight is to handle, how easily it is damaged and the carrier's liability for it. A higher class means a higher rate for the same weight, because the freight takes up more trailer space for what it weighs. Getting the class right matters. If the carrier inspects the freight and finds a different class, the price is corrected after pickup.

How is freight density calculated?

Density is the weight of a shipment divided by the space it takes up, measured in pounds per cubic foot. Measure the length, width and height of each piece in inches, including the pallet, and multiply them to get cubic inches. Divide by 1,728 to convert to cubic feet. Then divide the total weight in pounds by the cubic feet. For example, a pallet measuring 48 by 40 by 48 inches takes up 92,160 cubic inches, or about 53.3 cubic feet. If it weighs 500 pounds, its density is about 9.4 pounds per cubic foot. Lower density usually means a higher freight class.

What is dimensional weight in air freight?

Dimensional weight is the weight an airline assigns to a shipment based on the space it takes up. Airlines bill the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight, which is called the chargeable weight. To calculate it in US units, multiply length, width and height in inches, then divide by the airline's dim factor. A common divisor for domestic air cargo is 166. For example, a pallet measuring 48 by 40 by 36 inches has 69,120 cubic inches, which works out to about 416 pounds of dimensional weight. If that pallet weighs 300 pounds on the scale, it bills at about 416 pounds, because the larger figure applies.

What is a reweigh or reclassification?

A reweigh happens when a carrier weighs or measures a shipment after pickup and finds figures different from those on the bill of lading. A reclassification happens when an LTL carrier inspects the freight and assigns a different freight class. Either one can change the final bill from the original quote. The most common causes are missing pallet weight, rounded-down dimensions, packaging that was not counted and freight described too loosely. Carriers use dimensioning equipment and scales at their terminals, so estimates rarely survive the trip. Measuring and weighing every piece with its packaging before requesting a quote is the simplest way to avoid both.

How does a broker quote differ from a carrier quote?

A carrier quote comes from the company that owns the trucks or aircraft and covers only the equipment and lanes that carrier runs. A broker quote comes from a licensed freight broker, which arranges the shipment with carriers it books on your behalf. Because a broker is not tied to one fleet, it can compare several services for the same shipment, such as an expedited truck, a scheduled flight or a charter, and recommend the one that fits the deadline. The broker also manages the shipment as your contact through delivery. A carrier quote can make sense for regular freight on a lane that carrier runs often.

What is expedited freight?

Expedited freight is a shipment that moves faster than standard service, usually because a deadline cannot slip. On the ground, it typically means a dedicated vehicle, such as a cargo van, straight truck or hot shot, driving straight from pickup to delivery with no terminal stops. In the air, it means next flight out on a scheduled flight, hand carry by an onboard courier, or a chartered aircraft. Expedited freight costs more than standard LTL or scheduled freight because the vehicle or aircraft is committed to one shipment or one deadline. Common uses include replacement parts for a stopped production line, medical supplies and missed shipments.

What is a bill of lading?

A bill of lading, often shortened to BOL, is the shipping document that records a freight shipment. It lists the shipper, the receiver, the pickup and delivery addresses, the number of pieces, the weight, the freight description and, for LTL, the freight class. The driver signs it at pickup to confirm receipt, and the receiver signs it at delivery, which becomes the proof of delivery. It also serves as the contract of carriage between the shipper and the carrier. For air freight, the equivalent document is the air waybill. Accurate details on the bill of lading help keep the final bill matched to the quote.
