EXPRESS AIR FREIGHT

Express Air Shipping for Freight That Can't Wait in Line

Express air shipping works best when someone plans it backward from the deadline. The pickup has to beat the cutoff, the flight has to have room and the delivery truck has to be waiting at the other end.

AirFreight.com plans express air freight that way. We book next flight out or same day air for freight over parcel limits and arrange the trucks around the flight. One expediter tracks it until it is delivered.

Express also means someone watching the freight. When the flight lands, the delivery truck should already be at the airport. If the flight is late, the delivery time should be updated before you have to ask. That is the difference between express service and a fast booking.

Here is what express means for parcels and freight, and how it compares with standard air.

Next Flight Out

Freight goes on the first departure with space, with trucks timed to the cutoff. It is the core express option for boxes and pallets. Your expediter confirms the cutoff and the recovery time, so nothing waits at the airport.

Express air shipping Definition

What express air shipping means

Express air shipping covers the fastest air services. For parcels and documents, it means a door-to-door express service from a parcel network, within that network's size and weight limits.

Freight over those limits needs a different kind of express. Next flight out books the first departure with space, and same day air builds the move around flights that deliver the same day. Trucks handle pickup and delivery at both ends, which removes the wait for a scheduled pickup run.

AirFreight.com arranges the freight side of express air shipping.

In short

Express jumps the queue

Priority booking and loading for a fixed deadline. Standard air suits freight with a few days of slack.

Express vs standard Versus standard

Express versus standard air freight

Express air freight sits a step above standard air freight, which sits above deferred air. Express buys a priority booking and loading, while standard freight takes space as it becomes available. Express moves through fewer handling steps but faces tighter cutoffs.

Express works well for freight with a fixed deadline, such as production parts, medical devices and trade show displays. Standard air freight suits pallets with a few days of slack, and parcel express suits small boxes within network limits. Express costs more per pound because the freight jumps the queue.

We match the tier to your deadline, so you pay for express only when the date demands it. AirFreight.com books express air freight and tracks it from pickup to delivery.

EXPEDITED SHIPPING

Expedited freight moves differently than standard shipping methods, and understanding the process helps shippers make faster, better decisions when urgency hits.

Book the speed you need

Each faster tier costs more, so let the delivery date choose the tier.

Speed tiers The tiers

The speed tiers, from same day to deferred

While same day air is faster than overnight express, overnight is often the better buy for freight that can arrive tomorrow. Same day air and next flight out sit at the top of the ladder. Overnight express and two-day air follow, then standard air freight and deferred air.

For parcels, overnight and two-day express are far more practical than freight services. For pallets and crates, next flight out and standard air freight are the usual choices. Each step up in speed costs more, so the deadline should decide the tier.

This makes the tier a practical lever when the budget is tight but the date is fixed. AirFreight.com matches the tier to your shipment and books the flight that meets your deadline.

When freight is time critical
Episode 8 Aug 17, 2026 24 min

The Real Difference Between a Broker and a Logistics Partner

John Mark Peterson, one of AirFreight.com's top expediting agents, joins Kevin Carpenter to talk about what it's really like inside a traditional truckload brokerage, and why he left it behind. From "boiler room" sales culture to carrier accountability to what happens when a shipment is actually time critical, John Mark breaks down the differences most customers never see.

They cover the vetting process behind AirFreight.com's carrier pool, why "somewhat time critical" doesn't mean the same thing everywhere, and how a company built for the most urgent loads operates differently from a volume-driven brokerage. The episode closes with a fast round of personal questions on the On Air Gauntlet.

Capacity follows demand

E-commerce is expected to play a smaller role this peak because of tariff changes. Airlines may shift freighter space toward the busiest US-bound lanes.

Express Air Shipping Questions Answered

What is express air shipping?

Express air shipping is the fastest tier of air service. For parcels and documents, it usually means a door-to-door express service from a parcel network, delivered overnight or within a few business days within the network's size and weight limits. For larger freight, the express equivalents are services such as next flight out and same day air, which book the first suitable flight and use trucks for pickup and delivery. Express costs more than standard air freight because the shipment gets priority booking, loading and handling.

What is the difference between express and standard air freight?

Express air freight gets priority. It is booked on the first suitable flight, loaded ahead of other freight and moved through fewer handling steps. Standard air freight takes space as it becomes available, which can add a day or more. Express has tighter cutoffs and costs more per pound. Standard air freight suits pallets and crates with some slack in the schedule, while express suits shipments with a fixed deadline. Both are far faster than ocean freight over long distances.

What is next flight out?

Next flight out is an express freight service that books a shipment on the first scheduled flight with available space between two airports. A truck collects the freight and delivers it to the airline before the cutoff, and another truck recovers and delivers it at the destination. It handles freight over parcel limits, including pallets and crates. Next flight out depends on airline schedules and space, so when flights are full or none meets the deadline, a charter or hand carrier may be needed instead.

What is same day air?

Same day air is a service that delivers a shipment on the day it ships by using passenger or cargo flights that fit the deadline. It often works counter to counter, with the freight dropped at an airline's cargo counter and collected at the destination counter, or door to door with trucks at both ends. It suits small, urgent shipments such as parts, samples and documents. Whether same day delivery is possible depends on flight times between the two cities and how early the freight is ready.

What is deferred air freight?

Deferred air freight is a lower-cost service where the shipment flies when space is available rather than on a set flight. Airlines and forwarders use it to fill spare capacity, so shippers get a lower rate in exchange for a less certain delivery date. It is still much faster than ocean freight over long distances. Deferred service suits restocking and planned replenishment. It is not suitable for anything tied to a production line, an installation date or a customer deadline.

What is a tender cutoff?

A tender cutoff is the latest time freight can be delivered to an airline's cargo terminal and still make a particular flight. Cutoffs leave time for acceptance, security screening, building pallets and loading the aircraft. They vary by airline, airport and flight. Freight that arrives after the cutoff waits for a later departure, which can delay an express shipment by a day. Confirming a realistic ready time helps make sure pickup and the drive to the airport fit before the cutoff.

What is volumetric weight?

Volumetric weight, also called dimensional weight, is a calculated weight based on the space a shipment takes up. It is found by multiplying length, width and height and dividing by a set number called a divisor. Carriers bill the greater of volumetric weight and actual weight, so light, bulky shipments are charged for the space they use. Express services often use a smaller divisor than standard air freight, which raises the volumetric weight of the same box. Compact packaging lowers it.

What is an integrator?

An integrator is a company that owns and runs every part of its delivery chain: aircraft, trucks, sorting hubs and delivery routes. Because it controls each step, an integrator can offer door-to-door express service with tracking from pickup to delivery. Integrators are built for parcels and small freight that fit their size and weight limits and their sorting systems. Larger, heavier or unusually shaped freight often falls outside those limits and moves as air freight through airlines, brokers or forwarders instead.

Does express shipping guarantee delivery on time?

Not always. Many parcel express services offer a money-back guarantee, which refunds the shipping charge if a delivery is late, but the refund does not get the shipment there any faster. Guarantees often exclude delays from weather, security screening and other events outside the carrier's control. Express freight services such as next flight out depend on airline schedules and space. For deadlines that cannot slip, shippers often add a backup plan, such as a charter or a hand carrier, rather than relying on a guarantee.

What is the difference between an air waybill and a bill of lading?

An air waybill is the shipping document and contract of carriage for air freight. It lists the shipper, consignee, airports, pieces, weight, dimensions and contents, and it is not a document of title. A bill of lading is the shipping document for truck and ocean freight. An ocean bill of lading can serve as a document of title, which means it can transfer ownership of the goods. Express shipments that combine trucks and flights may carry a bill of lading for the road legs and an air waybill for the flight.

How long does express air shipping take?

It depends on the tier, the distance and the flight schedules. Parcel express services commonly offer overnight and two-day options within their networks. Freight services such as same day air aim to deliver the day the shipment is ready when flight times allow, and next flight out moves freight on the first departure with space. Cutoffs, weather, screening and connections all affect the result. Sharing the deadline and the ready time up front lets the right tier and flight be chosen.
