EXPEDITED SHIPPING SERVICES

Expedited Shipping for Freight on a Hard Deadline

A missed delivery can stop a production line, delay a job site or lose a customer. Expedited shipping exists to prevent that. It trades the lowest price for the shortest, most certain path to the dock.

AirFreight.com plans each expedited shipment around one deadline. We weigh every air and ground option against it and book the one that makes it. You hear from your expeditor the moment anything changes.

Not every urgent shipment needs the most expensive answer. Freight that has to arrive tomorrow can often fly on a planned next-day flight. On some lanes, a dedicated truck that drives through the night does the job. We start with the cheapest option that still makes the deadline and step up only when we have to.

Knowing what each service actually promises makes the choice easier.

Next Flight Out and Same Day Air

Freight goes on the first departure with room, or on a trip built to land the day it ships. Trucks handle pickup and recovery at both ends. It is the go-to option for urgent boxes and pallets. Your expeditor tracks the flight and times the delivery truck to its arrival.

Dedicated Air Charter

When no scheduled flight fits the deadline or the freight is too big for shared space, a whole aircraft flies it direct. It leaves when your freight is ready. There are no connections, so the plan has fewer places to slip.

URGENT TRUCKING Icon of a truck

Expedited Trucking

A dedicated van or truck drives straight from your dock to the delivery, with no terminals in between. On regional lanes it often matches air door to door. There are no airport cutoffs to meet, so the truck can leave as soon as the freight is loaded.

Quick answer

Faster than standard, by size

For a box, expedited is a faster tier; for freight, it is a dedicated move.

Expedited shipping What it means

What expedited shipping really means

Expedited shipping means moving a shipment faster than the standard service would. For a small package, it usually means a faster parcel tier. Two-day, overnight and same-day services replace a ground service that takes several business days. The faster tier buys a shorter transit and an earlier delivery window, at a higher price.

From a contract in an envelope to a pallet of parts to a crated machine, the meaning changes with size. Once a shipment is freight rather than a box, expedited stops being a tier on a rate chart. It becomes a dedicated move, planned around one shipment and one deadline.

AirFreight.com plans that kind of move for freight across North America. Every shipment is monitored from pickup to drop-off.

Why it matters

Air recovers the most time

Over long distances, a flight can make up a day that a truck cannot.

Expedited air Options

How air freight makes up lost time

Next flight out puts freight on the first scheduled departure with room, faster than a planned booking and far less costly than a charter. Same day air builds the trip so the freight lands the day it ships, when flight schedules allow.

Hand carry works well for small critical parts, such as a circuit board, a seal kit or documents. An onboard courier keeps the item in hand on a passenger flight. A dedicated air charter takes over when no scheduled flight fits the deadline or the freight is too large for shared space.

Trucks handle pickup and recovery at each end, so the flight is only one part of the trip. AirFreight.com matches the flight or charter to your freight and your deadline, and books the trucks on both ends.

Priority freight is filling air cargo space first

High-value tech freight is taking air cargo space first, which leaves other shippers with less predictable space and tighter booking windows.

Why space gets tight

Cloud, semiconductor and AI-related goods take precedence over lower-value shipments. That freight is booked earlier, so space for other shippers can disappear without any obvious change in headline data.

Rule of thumb

Distance decides air or road

On shorter runs the truck often wins door to door; on long ones, air usually does.

Expedited ground Air or truck

When a truck is the faster answer

While a plane covers distance faster, a dedicated truck is often quicker door to door on shorter runs. It leaves your dock as soon as it is loaded and drives straight to the delivery address, with no airport cutoff, screening or recovery.

For heavy, oversized or awkward freight, a flatbed or dry van provides a balance of capacity and speed that shared air space can't match. A two-driver team keeps a long run moving while one driver rests. A truck can also leave after the last flight of the day is gone.

This makes expedited ground a practical alternative to air when the deadline is tight but the distance or the freight makes flying unrealistic. AirFreight.com arranges the truck as readily as the flight, and one expeditor manages either from pickup to delivery.

Expedited Shipping Questions Answered

What is expedited shipping?

Expedited shipping is any service that moves a shipment faster than the standard option would. For parcels, it usually means paying for a faster tier, such as two-day, overnight or same-day delivery, instead of a ground service that takes several business days. For freight, it means a dedicated move planned around one shipment: a seat on the next flight out, an onboard courier, a chartered aircraft or a truck that drives straight to the receiver. The common thread is a deadline that standard service would miss. What changes with size is how the speed is achieved, from a faster lane through a sorting network to a vehicle or flight committed to a single shipment.

How does expedited shipping differ from express and overnight shipping?

The terms overlap, and carriers use them differently. Expedited is the broad term for anything faster than standard service. Express usually names a carrier's premium time-definite tiers, which often include next-morning or end-of-day delivery commitments. Overnight is a specific promise of delivery on the next business day. Same-day is the fastest tier and usually depends on distance, cutoff times and service area. In practice, the names matter less than three details: when the shipment must be tendered, which days count toward the promise, and what happens if the deadline is missed. For freight, the same words describe dedicated moves, such as next flight out or a chartered aircraft, where the plan is built around one shipment.

What is the difference between same-day shipping and same-day delivery?

Same-day shipping usually means an order leaves the shipper's dock on the day it is placed. The package then travels at whatever speed the chosen service provides, so it may arrive days later. Same-day delivery means the shipment reaches the receiver on the day it is picked up. That takes a short distance, a dedicated vehicle or a flight that connects the two cities in time. Online stores often use same-day shipping as a promise about how fast their warehouse works, while the transit time depends on the service chosen. For urgent freight, same-day delivery across long distances usually depends on next flight out, hand carry or a charter, with trucks handling pickup and delivery at each end.

What does a parcel delivery guarantee cover?

A parcel delivery guarantee is usually a promise to refund or credit the shipping charge when a service misses its stated delivery time. The terms set the conditions. The package typically has to be tendered before the daily cutoff, the destination must be in the service area, and many tiers count only business days. Weather, incorrect addresses and other events outside the carrier's control are often excluded, and some services suspend guarantees during peak season. A guarantee does not cover the cost of the delay itself, such as an idle production line or a missed installation. For shipments where a late arrival costs far more than the freight bill, time-definite freight planned around one shipment is the stronger safeguard.

What is time-definite freight?

Time-definite freight is a shipment booked to arrive by a specific time, with the plan built around that deadline. Instead of joining a network and receiving a delivery window, the shipment gets its own route: a seat on a particular flight, an onboard courier, a chartered aircraft or a dedicated truck. Pickup times, flight cutoffs and recovery at the destination are lined up before the freight moves. A person manages the shipment through each leg and adjusts the plan if a flight is delayed or a connection changes. Time-definite service costs more than standard freight because it reserves capacity and attention for one shipment. In return, it protects the deadline itself instead of refunding a fee after the fact.

What is expedited freight?

Expedited freight is the fast version of freight shipping, used for pallets, crates, machinery and other loads too large or heavy for parcel networks. It moves on dedicated or priority capacity: the next flight out on a scheduled airline, a hand carry courier for small critical parts, a chartered aircraft, or a truck that drives straight from pickup to delivery, sometimes with a two-driver team. Unlike expedited parcel service, it does not pass through sorting hubs, and one coordinator usually manages the shipment from start to finish. Shippers use it for line-down parts, replacement equipment, missed production deadlines and any load where a late arrival costs more than the faster service.

What is dimensional weight?

Dimensional weight is a billing weight based on size rather than mass. To calculate it in US units, multiply length, width and height in inches, then divide by the carrier's dim factor. Many parcel services use a divisor of 139 for commercial accounts, while domestic air cargo commonly uses 166. A carton measuring 24 by 18 by 18 inches has 7,776 cubic inches. At 139 it bills at about 56 pounds, and at 166 at about 47 pounds. If the carton weighs 25 pounds on the scale, it bills on its size either way. The carrier charges whichever is greater, actual or dimensional weight, so light, bulky freight costs more than its scale weight suggests.

When does a shipment become freight instead of a parcel?

A shipment usually becomes freight when it exceeds what a parcel network can sort and carry. Each parcel service sets limits on the weight of a single package and on its length and girth, because every box rides conveyors and is handled by hand along the way. Pallets, crates, machinery, long pieces and anything that needs a forklift or liftgate move as freight. A shipment of many small boxes can also travel more safely as one palletized freight shipment. Freight moves under a bill of lading or air waybill for the whole shipment, rather than a label on each box, and it is priced on chargeable weight, distance and service level.

What is next flight out service?

Next flight out is an expedited air service that places a shipment on the first scheduled flight with space between two airports. It is booked for the earliest departure rather than the most economical one, so it costs more than a planned air freight booking and far less than a chartered aircraft. A truck picks up the freight and delivers it to the airline's cargo terminal before the cutoff, and another truck recovers it at the destination airport for final delivery. It suits replacement parts, tooling, documents and other small to mid-sized freight that needs to arrive as soon as possible over a long distance.

How does team driving speed up expedited freight?

Team driving puts two licensed drivers in one truck so the vehicle can keep moving while one driver rests. Federal hours-of-service rules limit how long a single driver can drive before taking a break, which caps how far a solo truck can travel in a day. With two drivers alternating, the truck stops only for fuel, inspections and the change of drivers, so a long run is covered in far less time than one driver could legally manage. Team driving is common for cross-country expedited freight that is too large to fly or too costly to charter. It costs more than a solo truck because the trip needs two drivers.
