EXPEDITED AIR CHARTER

A Whole Aircraft for One Urgent Shipment

When a deadline is close, the cheapest way to ship stops mattering. What matters is the most direct way, and how fast it can start.

AirFreight.com arranges expedited air charter. We find an aircraft sized to the load, schedule it around your ready time and line up the trucks that collect and deliver the freight. One expediter manages the charter from pickup to delivery.

The aircraft follows the shipment. A turboprop can take a few crates into a short runway near a plant or job site. A converted business jet moves several pallets across the country in hours, and a freighter carries heavy and oversized loads in one move.

Here is how expedited air charter works, from choosing the aircraft to the signed delivery.

SMALL LOADS Icon of a charter aircraft

Turboprop Charter

A turboprop carries a few crates or a pallet to a short runway close to the delivery. It is the most economical charter for small urgent loads on regional routes. Landing near the site keeps the truck legs short.

Cargo Jet Charter

Business jets converted for cargo carry several pallets across the country in hours. They suit production parts and mid-size urgent loads. They can reach most mid-size airports, which keeps the trip direct.

HEAVY LOADS Icon of a widebody freighter

Freighter Charter

Narrowbody and widebody freighters carry heavy machinery and full aircraft loads in one move. Large main-deck and nose doors take pieces too big for anything smaller. Loading equipment is planned ahead so the aircraft turns quickly.

An expedited charter gives one urgent shipment its own aircraft.

Expedited charter Definition

What expedited charter means in freight

In freight, an expedited charter means the aircraft is yours for the trip.

Scheduled air freight moves on an airline's timetable and can wait for connections and cutoffs. A charter leaves when your freight is ready and flies straight to the airport nearest the destination. That exclusive use is what makes it fast.

AirFreight.com arranges that exclusive use in the air, with trucks at both ends. Every charter is monitored from pickup to delivery.

Aircraft Aircraft sizes

Charter aircraft: from turboprop to freighter

Charter aircraft come in a wide range of sizes, so the aircraft can be matched to the load instead of the other way around. The size, weight and dimensions of the largest piece usually decide where to start.

Turboprops such as the Pilatus PC-12 and Cessna Caravan carry a few pieces and use small regional airports. A converted business jet such as the Dassault Falcon 20 carries up to five pallets at jet speed. Jet freighters such as the DC-9 and Boeing 737 carry palletized loads on the main deck, and a Boeing 747 freighter takes the heaviest and longest freight.

Our dispatch team is available around the clock, including weekends and holidays, so you can book a charter at any hour. AirFreight.com matches the aircraft to your freight and the airports at each end.

What delays cost

A stopped plant can cost a fortune by the hour, and a large share of trade value moves by air. These figures show when a charter pays for itself.

Rule of thumb

Distance decides

When the drive is longer than the deadline allows, an air charter takes over.

Air charter When to fly

Air charter: when the distance is too long to drive

When the deadline is too tight for a drive, an air charter is the answer. Over long distances, a truck simply cannot arrive in time, while an aircraft can cover the same ground in hours. Remote sites near a small airport also favor a charter.

Turboprops carry a few crates into short runways. Light jets move small urgent loads quickly over longer distances, and freighters carry pallets and heavier freight. The distance, the load and the airports at each end decide which aircraft fits.

And when a charter isn't the right solution, we also offer next flight out for freight that a scheduled flight can take in time. AirFreight.com matches the aircraft to your freight and coordinates the trucks at both ends.

Source, position, fly, deliver

The aircraft repositions while a truck collects your freight. Complete details save a second call.

Booking From request to pickup

Booking an expedited charter

Skip the back-and-forth by sending complete details with your first request. We source the aircraft as soon as we know the load and the deadline. If it is based elsewhere, it flies to the origin airport while a truck collects your freight.

Pickup follows, then the flight, the truck to the delivery address and proof of delivery. Accurate weights, dimensions and ready times speed every step. A complete request removes the second call, which cuts the time before the aircraft is in the air.

Your shipment stays with one expediter from the first call to final delivery. AirFreight.com coordinates each step of the charter for you.

Delay versus aircraft

A charter pays when a late arrival would cost more than the whole aircraft.

Worth it? When it pays

When a charter is worth it

Whether your priority is a stopped line, a grounded aircraft or a crane crew on site, a charter remains one of the most reliable ways to protect the deadline. High-value goods that should not be handled twice also justify a whole aircraft.

Shared or scheduled service is the better buy for flexible deadlines. A hand carrier can take a small item, and next flight out can carry freight that a scheduled flight can deliver in time. Aircraft size, distance, positioning and timing all affect the cost of a charter.

AirFreight.com weighs these options with you before you book. Every shipment is monitored from pickup to drop-off.

Why Cheap Freight Costs More: Mike Pettrey on Trust & Expedited Trucking

On this episode of On Air with AirFreight.com, host Kevin Carpenter sits down with Mike Pettrey, CEO of C&M Transport out of Painesville, Ohio — one of AirFreight.com's most trusted carrier partners and one of the oldest expedite companies in the country, now in its 35th year.

Mike shares how his father founded C&M around fair treatment of drivers and owner-operators, why straight trucks and sprinter vans became the backbone of the expedite industry, and how dedicated capacity mitigates cargo risk that traditional LTL can't. The conversation covers freight rate compression since 1991, the industry's price-driven race to the bottom, why regulatory crackdowns are (in their view) good for carriers who play it straight, and how technology — real-time tracking, proactive delay alerts — is raising the bar for customer transparency without replacing the human judgment calls that keep freight moving safely.

Expedited Charter Questions Answered

What is an expedited charter?

An expedited charter is the booking of a whole aircraft for one urgent shipment. The aircraft carries only that shipment and flies directly to the airport nearest the delivery, departing as soon as the freight is ready. Trucks handle pickup and final delivery. Shippers use expedited charter when a deadline is too tight for scheduled flights or when the freight is too large for scheduled aircraft. Clear details about the freight and deadline help the right aircraft be chosen the first time.

What does exclusive use mean in freight?

Exclusive use means one shipper reserves an entire aircraft for its shipment. No other freight is loaded, so there are no stops for other customers and no transfers through terminals. Exclusive use reduces handling, which lowers the risk of damage or loss, and it removes the delays of shared networks. It costs more than shared space because the shipper pays for the whole aircraft, but for urgent or high-value freight the speed and control are often worth it. For high-value goods, fewer handoffs also mean fewer chances for something to go missing along the way.

What is an air charter?

An air charter is the hire of a whole aircraft for one shipment. The aircraft departs when the freight is ready and flies to the airport nearest the destination, with trucks handling pickup and final delivery. Air charter is used when no scheduled flight meets the deadline, when freight is too large for scheduled aircraft, or when it needs to reach a smaller airport. Aircraft range from small turboprops for a few crates to large freighters for heavy loads. The operator holds the certificate to fly the aircraft, while a broker often arranges the trip and the ground legs.

What is a positioning leg?

A positioning leg is the flight an aircraft makes without freight to reach the origin airport. If the nearest suitable aircraft is based in another city, it has to fly empty to pick up your shipment. Positioning takes time and adds to the cost, which is why the location of available aircraft affects both how quickly a charter can start and what it costs. Choosing an aircraft based nearby is one of the simplest ways to shorten the start of a charter.

What is next flight out?

Next flight out is a service that books freight on the first scheduled flight with space between two airports, with trucks for pickup and delivery. It is not a charter, because the freight shares the aircraft with other cargo and passengers, but it is fast and much cheaper than chartering a whole plane. When next flight out can meet the deadline, it is often the better choice. When flights are full or none fits, an air charter takes over. Freight that is ready early has the best chance of making a scheduled flight.

What is line-down freight?

Line-down freight is a part or material needed to restart a production line that has stopped. Because an idle line can cost a manufacturer heavily for every hour it is down, line-down shipments are among the most urgent in freight. They often move by charter, such as an air charter, or by hand carry for small parts. Speed of dispatch matters as much as the travel time itself. Manufacturers often keep a list of who to call for line-down parts so the response starts within minutes.

When is an expedited charter worth it?

An expedited charter is worth it when a late arrival would cost more than the whole aircraft. Common examples are a stopped production line, an aircraft on the ground, a crew waiting on a job site, a medical deadline or high-value goods that should not be handled through terminals. When the deadline is flexible, the freight is small enough for a hand carrier, or a scheduled flight can make it in time, shared or scheduled services usually cost less. A quick comparison of the cost of delay against the cost of the aircraft usually makes the choice clear.

What aircraft are used for an expedited charter?

Charter aircraft range from small turboprops such as the Pilatus PC-12, which carry a few pieces into short runways, to converted business jets for a few pallets and jet freighters such as the Boeing 737 and 747 for heavy loads. The right aircraft depends on the weight and dimensions of the largest piece, the total load, the distance and the airports at each end. Sharing exact dimensions lets the smallest suitable aircraft be chosen, which keeps the cost down.
