Charter Shipping

Charter shipping means hiring a whole aircraft or vessel for one cargo. When freight cannot wait weeks for a ship, an air cargo charter moves it in hours. AirFreight.com arranges air cargo charter across North America, from turboprops to widebody freighters.

AIR CARGO CHARTER

Charter Shipping by Air, When a Voyage Is Too Slow

Chartering means hiring the whole vehicle so it moves on your schedule. Ships are chartered for bulk cargo that can spend weeks at sea. For urgent freight, the same idea works in the air: you hire the whole aircraft, and it flies when your cargo is ready.

AirFreight.com arranges air cargo charter. We source aircraft from small turboprops to widebody freighters, plan the loading and coordinate the trucks at both ends. One expediter manages each charter from the first call to delivery.

An air charter costs more per pound than scheduled freight. It also removes airline schedules, connections and cutoffs. That trade makes sense when the cargo is worth more on time than the freight bill: a stalled project, an idle plant or a contract with penalties for delay.

Here is how air cargo charter works and when it is the right call.

SMALL AIRCRAFT Air charter icon

Turboprop Charter

A turboprop carries a few crates to a short runway near the delivery. It is the most economical charter for small urgent loads on regional routes. It can land close to a plant or job site, which keeps the truck legs short.

MIDSIZE Air cargo icon

Jet and Narrowbody Charter

Business jets converted for cargo and narrowbody freighters carry several pallets across the country in hours. They suit production parts and mid-size project loads. They balance capacity and speed, and they can reach most mid-size airports.

HEAVY LIFT Air freight icon

Widebody Freighter Charter

For heavy machinery and full aircraft loads, a widebody freighter carries the shipment in one move. Nose and main deck doors take pieces too big for anything smaller. Ground handling and loading equipment are planned in advance, so the aircraft turns quickly.

Charter shipping Definition

What charter shipping actually means

Whether your priority is a hard deadline, an oversized piece or a remote delivery, chartering is one of the most direct ways to move cargo. A charter hires a whole aircraft, or a whole ship, for one shipment, so the route and the timing follow the cargo.

At sea, chartered ships carry bulk and project cargo on voyages that take weeks. In the air, a chartered aircraft departs when the freight is ready and flies straight to the airport nearest the delivery, with no connections or shared space. For time-critical freight, that is the version of charter shipping that matters.

AirFreight.com arranges air cargo charter for freight that can't wait. Every charter we arrange is monitored from pickup to delivery.

Priced by the trip

You pay for the aircraft, crew and flight hours, full or not. Aircraft size matters most.

Cost What drives cost

What shapes the cost of an air charter

An air charter is priced for the whole trip, not by the pound. You pay for the aircraft, the crew and the flight hours, whether the aircraft is full or not.

Aircraft size is the biggest factor, so matching the smallest suitable aircraft to the load keeps the price down. Distance and flight time come next. If the nearest aircraft is based elsewhere, the positioning flight to your origin airport is part of the trip. Ground handling, loading equipment and the trucks at both ends complete the price.

Exact weights and dimensions let us size the aircraft correctly the first time. AirFreight.com gives you the full charter quote before anything moves.

AIR FREIGHT EXPLAINED

When a shipment is critical, air freight is usually the answer. But which kind? This video breaks down your two main options: commercial air freight and air cargo charter, and explains when each one makes sense.

The difference

Hours instead of weeks

An air charter trades payload for speed and leaves when your freight is ready.

Air cargo charter How it works

Air cargo charter: charter at flight speed

Air charter brokers usually book a whole aircraft from a licensed operator, including the trucks that collect and deliver the freight. This means your shipment departs when it is ready and flies direct, whenever no scheduled flight meets the deadline.

The trip takes hours instead of the weeks a ship needs. The price covers the trip and any positioning legs, and aircraft range from a turboprop for a few crates to a Boeing 747 freighter for the largest loads.

Our dispatch team is available around the clock, including weekends and holidays, so you can book a charter at any hour. We make sure your freight arrives on time.

When to charter

No flight meets the deadline

A stopped line, an aircraft on the ground or a piece too large for a passenger hold.

When to charter When it fits

When an air charter makes sense

While scheduled air freight is the better buy for cargo that fits a regular flight, an air charter is often the better choice when no flight meets the deadline. A stopped production line, an aircraft on the ground or a project crew waiting on a part all put the deadline first.

Size and access matter too. Pieces too large for a passenger aircraft's hold can fly on a freighter, and a small turboprop can land close to a plant or job site that a big airport is far from. High-value cargo that should not be handled twice also suits a whole aircraft.

Bulk cargo with weeks to spare still belongs on a ship. When the deadline is days or hours away, AirFreight.com arranges an air cargo charter matched to your freight.

WhatWe Provide

The Right Mode, Every Time

The right charter is the aircraft that fits your freight, not the biggest one available. We match the load to the aircraft, from turboprops for a few crates to widebody freighters for heavy cargo, across the US, Canada and Mexico. When a scheduled flight, a hand carrier or a truck is the better answer, we book that instead.

Charter Shipping Questions Answered

What does it mean when a ship is chartered?

A chartered ship has been hired by a charterer from its owner for a specific voyage, a period of time, or a series of voyages. The terms are set out in a contract called a charter party. Chartering differs from booking space on a liner service, where many shippers share a ship that follows a fixed route and timetable. With a charter, the charterer decides, within the contract, what the ship carries and where it goes. Ships are chartered for bulk commodities, fuel, project cargo and other loads large enough to justify a whole vessel or a dedicated sailing.

How is an air cargo charter priced?

An air cargo charter is usually priced for the whole trip rather than by weight. The main factors are the size of the aircraft, the flight time, any positioning flight needed to bring the aircraft to the origin airport, and handling at both airports. Trucks for pickup and delivery are added on top. Because the price covers the whole aircraft, choosing the smallest aircraft that fits the load is the simplest way to keep the cost down.

What aircraft are used for cargo charter?

Cargo charters use a wide range of aircraft. Small turboprops such as the Pilatus PC-12 and Cessna Caravan carry a few pieces and can use short runways. Converted business jets such as the Dassault Falcon 20 carry a few pallets at jet speed. Jet freighters such as the Boeing 737 and 767 carry palletized loads, and the Boeing 747 freighter takes the heaviest and longest freight, with a nose door for oversized pieces.

How quickly can an air charter be arranged?

Many air charters can be arranged within hours of the first call, depending on where suitable aircraft and crews are based, the airports involved and the time of day. A positioning flight may be needed if the nearest aircraft is in another city. Sending complete details with the first request, including weights, dimensions, ready time and deadline, is the quickest way to get a charter moving.

When is an air charter better than a scheduled flight?

An air charter is usually the better choice when no scheduled flight can meet the deadline, when the freight is too large or heavy for scheduled aircraft, or when it needs to reach an airport that airlines do not serve. It also suits high-value cargo that should not be handled at connections. When a scheduled flight or next flight out can make the deadline, it usually costs far less.

What information is needed for a charter quote?

A charter quote needs the pickup and delivery addresses, the number of pieces, the weight and dimensions of each piece, whether the freight is hazardous, the time the freight is ready and the time it must arrive. Notes on loading docks, forklifts or liftgates at each end help plan the trucks. The more exact the details, the more accurate the quote and the aircraft choice.

Is shipping by cargo ship cheaper than flying?

Per pound, shipping by sea is far cheaper than flying, which is why most of the world's cargo by weight travels on ships. The trade-off is time. An ocean voyage between continents takes weeks, plus time at ports, while air freight moves in hours or days. Air also cuts handling and reduces the inventory a business has to hold in transit. That is why high-value goods, urgent parts, perishables and anything holding up production often fly even though the freight bill is higher. The cheaper mode depends on what a late arrival would cost the business.

What is an air cargo charter?

An air cargo charter is the hire of a whole aircraft to carry one shipper's freight. The aircraft departs when the cargo is ready and flies to the airport nearest the destination, usually with trucks handling pickup and final delivery. Shippers use air charters when no scheduled flight meets the deadline, when freight is too large or heavy for passenger aircraft holds, or when the cargo needs to reach a smaller airport. Aircraft range from small turboprops to large widebody freighters. The operator holds the certificate to fly the aircraft, and a broker often arranges the charter for the shipper.
