AIR CARGO SERVICES

Shipping Cargo by Air, Done Right the First Time

Air is the fastest way to move cargo over a long distance, but only if every step lines up. The booking has to match the cargo, the paperwork has to be right and the freight has to reach the airline before the cutoff. One slip pushes it to a later flight.

AirFreight.com takes care of those steps. We book the flight that fits your cargo and deadline, then the trucks at both ends. One expediter follows the shipment until it is delivered.

The details that matter most are the size of each piece, the total weight and the deadline. Together they decide which aircraft can take the cargo, which airports make sense and how much time the trucks have. Get them right on the first call, and the cargo flies on the first plan.

Here is how cargo flies, how it is loaded and what slows it down.

Passenger and Freighter Flights

Most urgent cargo flies on scheduled passenger or freighter flights. We book the first departure with space, or a planned flight when there is time. Your expediter checks the cutoff, the aircraft type and the recovery time before booking.

Chartered Aircraft

Cargo that is too big or too urgent for a scheduled flight gets its own aircraft. It flies direct, on your schedule. We size the aircraft to the load and fly it to the airport closest to the delivery.

Three ways

Belly, freighter or charter

Cargo flies in passenger aircraft holds, on freighters or on a chartered aircraft.

Cargo by air The basics

Air cargo, air freight and the ways cargo flies

Air cargo means anything an aircraft carries besides passengers and their bags, while air freight usually refers to commercial goods.

Cargo flies three ways. Passenger aircraft carry it in the lower holds, freighters carry it on a main deck built for pallets, and chartered aircraft carry one shipper's cargo alone. Each suits different sizes, deadlines and budgets.

AirFreight.com picks the one that fits your cargo. Every shipment is monitored from pickup to delivery.

How cargo moves

Passenger belly, freighter, charter or expedited ground

Each option suits a different size, rule set and deadline. AirFreight.com arranges all four and matches the option to your cargo.

AIR FREIGHT EXPLAINED

When a shipment is critical, air freight is usually the answer. But which kind? This video breaks down your two main options: commercial air freight and air cargo charter, and explains when each one makes sense.

Airplane in flight
Your part

Pack it to fly

Sturdy, labeled packaging, marked if it cannot be stacked. Doors and decks set the limits.

Loading How it is loaded

How cargo is loaded

Whether your priority is one crate, a few pallets or a full load, packing remains one of the most practical ways to make cargo fit. Pieces are stacked on aircraft pallets or in containers called ULDs, then netted and strapped. A freighter's main deck takes large pallets through a wide door.

The lower deck, or belly, takes smaller ULDs and loose cargo. Packaging is the shipper's job: sturdy, labeled and marked if it cannot be stacked. Doors, decks and floor loading set the size and weight limits for each piece.

Our dispatch team is available around the clock, including weekends and holidays, so you can book cargo at any hour. AirFreight.com makes sure your cargo is booked on an aircraft it fits.

Where time goes

The ground legs count

Pickup, tender, screening, build-up, recovery and final mile can take as long as the flight.

The process Step by step

From booking to delivery, step by step

The ground legs of an air shipment often take as long as the flight itself. It starts with a booking that has accurate dimensions and weight. A truck picks up the cargo and delivers it to the airline before the tender cutoff.

The airline accepts and screens the cargo, then builds it onto ULDs for loading. After the flight, the cargo is broken down and recovered at the destination airport. A truck handles final-mile delivery, and proof of delivery closes the shipment.

We coordinate every one of those handoffs, so nothing waits on a missing step. AirFreight.com keeps you updated from pickup to delivery.

Honest fit

Some cargo should drive

Short lanes, oversized freight and flexible deadlines usually favor a dedicated truck.

Ground option When to drive

When cargo should stay on the ground

No matter how urgent your cargo is, we're here to tell you when a truck is the better way. On short lanes, a dedicated truck often arrives before cargo could clear airport handling. Very heavy or oversized freight, and cargo that cannot fly, also move better by road.

Flexible deadlines favor ground too, because a truck usually costs less than a flight. Hot shot trucks, expedited vans and full truckloads cover these runs. Every shipment is monitored from pickup to drop-off.

AirFreight.com arranges cargo by air and dedicated ground across North America with one expediter. Talk to our expeditors about your cargo, and we'll find the right option.

Zero problems, ahead of schedule

My only criticism is that there isn’t an option for more than five stars. I’ve been burned by more hotshot brokers than I can count, and this is the first time I’ve had a shipment show up ahead of schedule with absolutely zero damage or tampering. I could not recommend AirFreight more strongly, we will be using them exclusively going forward. A bit higher priced but frankly inexpensive compared to the problems caused by prior shippers. 11/10, no notes.

Cargo by Air Questions Answered

What is the difference between air cargo and air freight?

Air cargo is a broad term for anything carried on an aircraft other than passengers and their baggage, including commercial goods, mail and express packages. Air freight usually refers to commercial goods shipped by air, such as pallets, crates and machinery, as opposed to parcels and mail. In everyday use, many people treat the two terms as the same. For shippers, the practical distinction is between parcel services, which move small packages through hubs, and air freight services, which move larger shipments on flights with trucks at each end.

What is a ULD?

A ULD, or unit load device, is a standard aircraft pallet or container used to group cargo so it can be loaded and secured quickly. Pallets are flat platforms where cargo is stacked and held with nets and straps. Containers are enclosed boxes shaped to fit the aircraft's hold. Each aircraft type accepts specific ULD sizes in specific positions. Airlines and ground handlers build cargo onto ULDs at the airport, so shippers usually deliver their own pallets or crates, which are then placed onto the aircraft's ULDs.

What is the difference between belly cargo and a freighter?

Belly cargo flies in the lower holds of passenger aircraft, beneath the cabin. It benefits from the large number of passenger flights, but piece size and height are limited, and cargo must be screened and come from a known shipper. A freighter is an aircraft dedicated to cargo, with a main deck for large pallets and pieces. Freighters fly fewer routes but handle bigger, heavier cargo and some dangerous goods that cannot fly on passenger aircraft. Many shipments are booked on whichever fits the cargo and deadline.

What is an air waybill?

An air waybill is the main shipping document for cargo moving by air. It acts as the contract between the shipper and the airline and as a receipt for the goods. It lists the shipper and consignee, the airports, the number of pieces, weight, dimensions and a description of the contents, along with any special handling instructions. Each air waybill has a unique number used to track the shipment. Unlike some ocean bills of lading, it is not a document of title and cannot be used to transfer ownership of the cargo.

What is the difference between a master and a house air waybill?

When a freight forwarder consolidates several shippers' cargo into one larger shipment, the airline issues a master air waybill for the whole consolidation, naming the forwarder as shipper. The forwarder then issues a house air waybill to each individual shipper, describing that shipper's part of the load. The master covers the flight between airports, while each house air waybill covers the individual shipment. Both numbers can be used to track the cargo. Shipments booked directly with the airline, rather than consolidated, usually carry only one air waybill.

How is air cargo screened in the US?

In the United States, all cargo carried on passenger aircraft must be screened under Transportation Security Administration rules before it is loaded. Screening can use X-ray, explosives trace detection, physical inspection or other approved methods. It may happen at the airline's terminal, at a certified screening facility before the cargo reaches the airport, or at a shipper's own certified facility. Companies that tender cargo to passenger airlines must follow TSA security programs. Accurate descriptions and packaging that can be inspected help screening go quickly and keep cargo on its planned flight.

What is a known shipper?

A known shipper is a business whose identity has been verified under the Transportation Security Administration's air cargo security program. Cargo from a known shipper can be accepted on passenger aircraft, subject to screening, while cargo from an unknown shipper is generally limited to all-cargo aircraft. Known shipper status is managed by the airlines and by the companies that tender cargo to them. It matters to shippers because passenger flights offer many more departures than freighters, which can mean faster delivery and more options when a deadline is tight.

What is dimensional weight?

Dimensional weight is a calculated weight based on how much space a shipment takes up. For US domestic air cargo measured in inches and pounds, it is commonly found by multiplying length, width and height and dividing by 166. Airlines charge the greater of dimensional weight and actual weight, which is called chargeable weight. Light, bulky cargo is charged for the space it fills, while dense cargo is charged for what it weighs. Compact packaging and accurate measurements help keep the chargeable weight, and the cost, under control.

What is recovery in air freight?

Recovery is the step where cargo is collected from the airline's terminal at the destination airport after the flight. Once the cargo has been unloaded and broken down from its ULD, the airline makes it available for pickup, and a truck or courier recovers it and takes it on for delivery. Recovery timing depends on how quickly the airline processes the arriving cargo and on terminal hours. For urgent shipments, having a truck ready at the destination airport as soon as the cargo is available saves valuable time.

What is a cargo-aircraft-only shipment?

A cargo-aircraft-only shipment contains dangerous goods that are allowed to fly only on freighters, not on passenger aircraft. Certain lithium batteries, flammable materials and other hazardous goods fall into this category under US hazardous materials rules and IATA regulations. These shipments must carry a cargo-aircraft-only label and be declared properly. Because freighters fly fewer routes than passenger aircraft, cargo-aircraft-only goods have fewer flight options, which can affect timing. A dedicated truck or an air charter is sometimes the better choice for them.

What is cargo insurance for air shipments?

Airline liability for cargo loss or damage is limited, often to an amount per kilogram, which may cover only a fraction of the value of expensive goods. Cargo insurance is separate coverage that protects the full value of a shipment against loss or damage in transit. Shippers of high-value items, such as electronics, medical devices or machinery parts, often buy it for air shipments. The right coverage depends on the value of the goods, the route and any existing policies. Good packaging and accurate paperwork also reduce the chance of a claim.
