AIRCRAFT CHARTER FOR CARGO

The Right Aircraft for Your Cargo, On Your Schedule

An aircraft charter is the most direct way to move urgent cargo. You pick the departure time and the airports, and the aircraft carries nothing but your freight. The only question is which aircraft.

AirFreight.com answers it by starting with the load. We size the aircraft to your pieces, weight and distance, from a turboprop to a jet freighter, then arrange the trucks and ground handling at both ends. One expediter manages the charter to delivery.

Class decides cost as much as speed. A turboprop costs less per hour than a jet, but it flies slower and carries less. A jet freighter takes the biggest loads but needs a longer runway. We size the aircraft to the job, so you don't pay for space you don't use.

Here is how aircraft charter works and how the aircraft classes compare.

AUTOMOTIVE Air charter icon

Line-Down Parts

A stopped plant can't wait for an airline. A charter flies the part to the airport nearest the line, with a truck waiting on the ramp. We line up the delivery truck before the aircraft departs, so the part goes straight to the line.

AEROSPACE Air cargo icon

AOG Parts

Engines, components and tooling fly straight to a grounded aircraft, wherever it is parked. Every hour on the ground counts. We coordinate with the repair team, so the part is ready to install on arrival.

MEDICAL Air freight icon

Time-Critical Medical Freight

Medical devices and equipment with a fixed procedure date fly direct, with no connections that could push them past the window. The aircraft flies to the airport closest to the hospital, and a truck is waiting on arrival.

In short

Your aircraft, your schedule

A charter hires the whole aircraft, so it flies when and where your load needs.

Aircraft charter How it works

How aircraft charter works

Aircraft charter is the on-demand hire of a whole aircraft for one trip, booked through an operator or a broker.

The customer picks the timing and the airports instead of fitting into an airline's schedule. Charter carries passengers and cargo, and the same aircraft classes serve both. What changes for cargo is the focus on doors, payload and ground handling rather than seats.

AirFreight.com arranges aircraft charter for cargo, not passenger flights. Every charter we arrange is monitored from pickup to delivery.

Quick guide

Turboprop to jet freighter

Each class trades speed, range and capacity against cost and airport access.

Aircraft classes The classes

The aircraft classes

A turboprop carries a few crates into a short runway, slower than a jet but able to land closer to remote sites. An aircraft charter jet, such as a light or midsize business jet, flies faster and farther, and some are converted to carry small urgent loads. Heavy jets add range for long trips.

Jet freighters carry pallets on a main deck through a wide cargo door, which makes them the choice for heavy loads. Each class trades speed, range and capacity against cost and airport access.

We match the class to your load, the distance and the airports at each end. AirFreight.com arranges the right aircraft for your cargo and coordinates it from pickup to delivery.

Chartering an aircraft for cargo

Charter brokers usually start with the cargo's weight and dimensions, including the largest piece. This ensures the aircraft can take the load whenever a charter is booked. Cargo doors, payload, floor loading and pallet sizes decide which aircraft fits.

Dangerous goods must be declared and accepted by the operator, and ground handling at both airports has to be ready. An aircraft charter jet carries small urgent loads, while freighters carry pallets. Trucks handle pickup and delivery at each end.

Our dispatch team is available around the clock, including weekends and holidays, so you can book a charter at any hour. AirFreight.com makes sure the aircraft fits your cargo before it flies.

First time customer

First time customer. Communication was fantastic throughout the entire process and is sincerely appreciated. Our customer shared an update this morning that the driver texted a little before 5 am that he would be there at 8. That’s exactly when he pulled in. She said it was a much easier process than she ever thought it would be and was very grateful.

Zero problems, ahead of schedule

My only criticism is that there isn’t an option for more than five stars. I’ve been burned by more hotshot brokers than I can count, and this is the first time I’ve had a shipment show up ahead of schedule with absolutely zero damage or tampering. I could not recommend AirFreight more strongly, we will be using them exclusively going forward. A bit higher priced but frankly inexpensive compared to the problems caused by prior shippers. 11/10, no notes.

  • Jet and trucks booked by the same person
  • Updates at pickup, wheels-up, wheels-down and delivery

The Right Mode, Every Time

The right charter jet is the aircraft your cargo needs, from a turboprop for a few crates to a 747 freighter for the largest loads. When next flight out, a hand carrier or a truck will meet the deadline, we book that instead. You never pay for capacity you do not need, across the US, Canada and Mexico.

Aircraft Charter Questions Answered

What is aircraft charter?

Aircraft charter is the on-demand hire of a whole aircraft for a specific trip. The customer chooses the departure time and airports rather than buying seats or space on a scheduled flight. Charter flights are operated by companies certificated by the FAA to fly for hire and are often booked through brokers who compare aircraft from several operators. Most charters carry passengers, but aircraft are also chartered to move urgent cargo when no scheduled flight can meet the deadline or the load is too large for one.

What is a turboprop?

A turboprop is an aircraft powered by turbine engines that drive propellers. Turboprops are slower than jets but can operate from short runways and small airfields, which lets them land close to plants, job sites and remote locations. Many small turboprops can be configured to carry cargo instead of passengers, with a few thousand pounds of payload. For cargo charters, they are often the most economical choice for a few crates or urgent parts over shorter distances, especially where large airports are far from the delivery.

What is a light jet?

A light jet is a small business jet, usually seating a handful of passengers in its passenger role. Light jets cruise faster and fly farther than most turboprops, and they can use many smaller airports. Some business jets are converted to carry cargo, with seats removed and larger doors, so they can move small urgent loads quickly over long distances. For cargo, a light or converted business jet suits a few pallets or boxes that must cross the country faster than a turboprop could fly them.

What is a midsize jet?

A midsize jet is a business jet larger than a light jet, with more cabin space and longer range. In passenger service it carries more people farther without stopping. For cargo, a midsize jet offers more room and range than a light jet, though most dedicated cargo charters for larger loads use converted business jets or jet freighters instead. The class names describe passenger configurations, so for freight the more useful measures are the cargo door size, payload and volume of the specific aircraft.

What is a jet freighter?

A jet freighter is a jet aircraft built or converted to carry cargo, with a reinforced floor, a cargo handling system and a large main-deck door. Some freighters also have a nose door for long items. Jet freighters range from narrowbody aircraft carrying several pallets to widebody aircraft carrying very heavy loads over long distances. They fly scheduled cargo routes and are also available for charter when a shipment needs a whole aircraft, making them the choice for heavy or bulky urgent cargo.

What is an empty leg?

An empty leg is a charter flight that would otherwise fly without customers, such as when an aircraft returns to base after a trip or positions for its next one. Operators often sell empty legs at a discount, but the route and timing are already fixed by the original trip. That makes them hard to use for urgent cargo, which needs to move on its own schedule. When an empty leg happens to match a shipment's route and timing, though, it can offer a lower-cost way to charter an aircraft.

What is a positioning leg?

A positioning leg is a flight an aircraft makes without customers or cargo to reach the airport where a charter begins. If the best available aircraft is based in another city, it must fly to the origin first. A charter may also include a return leg if the aircraft flies home empty afterward. Positioning and return legs are part of the cost of a charter, which is why prices for the same trip can differ depending on where suitable aircraft happen to be located.

What is FAA Part 135?

Part 135 is the section of Federal Aviation Administration regulations that governs commuter and on-demand air carriers, including most charter operators in the United States. A company with a Part 135 certificate has been approved to carry passengers or cargo for hire on demand, with rules for pilots, maintenance, operations and record-keeping. Larger scheduled carriers operate under Part 121. Any charter, passenger or cargo, should be flown by an operator holding the appropriate certificate, and customers can ask which operator will fly the trip.

Can a business jet carry cargo?

Yes. Business jets can carry small cargo loads, especially when seats are removed or when the aircraft has been converted for freight. Converted business jets often have larger cargo doors and can carry a few pallets of urgent parts over long distances at jet speed. They suit high-value or time-critical shipments that are too large for a hand carrier but too small to justify a large freighter. The operator must agree to carry the cargo, and any dangerous goods must be declared and accepted.

Why do identical charter trips cost different amounts?

Charter prices depend on more than the route. Where available aircraft are based affects positioning costs, and a trip may include an empty return leg. The aircraft class and its hourly operating cost matter, as do timing, demand, crew overnights, airport and handling fees and any special handling. Two quotes for the same trip may use different aircraft or start from different bases. Comparing quotes on the aircraft, the legs included and the total cost gives a clearer picture than the headline price alone.

How is the right aircraft chosen for a charter?

The right aircraft is usually the smallest one that can carry the load safely and on time. For cargo, that means checking the largest piece against the cargo door, the total weight against the payload, the distance against the range, and the airports at each end against the aircraft's runway needs. Positioning distance and availability also matter. A good broker compares several options and explains the trade-offs, so the shipper pays only for the capacity and speed the shipment actually needs.
