AIR SHIPPING SERVICES

Air Shipping Services Matched to the Shipment

The fastest air service isn't always the right one. A small box can ride a parcel network overnight. A pallet with three days to spare can save money on a scheduled flight. A part that's needed tonight may need a courier or a whole aircraft.

AirFreight.com arranges every freight option in that range, from scheduled air freight to charter. We match the service to your shipment's size, weight and deadline. One expediter books it and follows it to delivery.

Price follows speed and space. Scheduled air freight shares the aircraft with other cargo, so it costs the least. Next flight out pays for priority, hand carry pays for a courier's time and charter pays for the whole aircraft. We quote the tiers that make your deadline, so you can choose.

Here is how the services compare and how air shipping is priced.

Size and deadline decide

The shipment's size and its deadline pick the air service, not the other way round.

Air shipping Choosing one

Match the air service to your shipment

Documents and small boxes within parcel limits usually go air express through a parcel network. Palletized freight goes air freight on scheduled flights, consolidated with other freight or on a priority booking. Freight with a flexible date can go deferred at a lower cost.

A small critical part can travel with a hand carrier on a passenger flight. Freight too big, too heavy or too urgent for any scheduled flight goes on an air charter. Matching air shipping services to the shipment avoids paying for speed you do not need, which keeps the cost in line with the deadline.

Once freight outgrows parcel limits, freight service takes over. AirFreight.com arranges every one of those freight services.

Deadline, distance, size, value

Air is the right call when time is worth more than the freight bill.

Choosing a mode Air, ocean or truck

Air, ocean or truck for your freight

When speed counts but the freight is valuable, air shipping services are an excellent option for parts, electronics and goods with a fixed date. Ocean freight costs far less per pound but takes weeks from port to port. Air takes hours to days, which also cuts the inventory you hold in transit.

Within North America, the real alternative to a plane is often a truck. We support your deadline with air freight, charter and dedicated ground, from Sprinter vans to team truckloads. A dedicated truck often beats air on shorter lanes, and it is also the right call for oversized freight or hazmat that cannot fly.

The deadline, the distance, the size of the shipment and the value of the goods decide the mode. AirFreight.com weighs those with you and books the option that arrives in time.

Preparing a shipment for air

Most delays and surprise charges in air shipping start on the ground. AirFreight.com walks you through these steps before pickup so your freight makes its flight.

  1. 01

  4. 04

    Prepare documents

Have the details for the air waybill ready. International shipments also need a commercial invoice and a packing list.

  5. 05

    Confirm ready time

Confirm when the freight will be ready and when it must arrive. Ready time decides which flight cutoff the freight can make.

    • Cutoff
  6. 06

    Tender for pickup

Have the freight at the dock for pickup at the agreed time. It is screened before it flies on a passenger or cargo aircraft.

    • Screening

Dangerous goods rules vary by class and carrier; confirm requirements before you ship.

Details decide the flight

Wrong dimensions mean a reweigh. Missing paperwork holds freight at screening.

Preparation Getting it right

Prepare it right and it flies on time

While the flight takes only hours, the ground work before it often decides whether freight arrives on time. Wrong dimensions trigger a reweigh and a new charge after pickup. Poor packaging can get freight refused or damaged, and missing paperwork holds it at screening.

For most air shipments, accurate details are far more practical than trying to recover lost time later. A late ready time can miss the cutoff for the planned flight. Known shipper status and accurate descriptions help screening go smoothly for freight on passenger aircraft.

This makes one accurate quote request a practical way to save hours later, when the freight is already moving. AirFreight.com checks the details with you before booking and keeps your shipment on its planned flight.

An update at every handoff

You hear from your expediter at pickup, departure, arrival and delivery.

Door to door How it moves

How your air shipment moves door to door

As soon as you request a quote, you'll be connected with a dedicated expediter who plans the flight and the trucks. A truck picks up at your dock and delivers the freight to the airline before cutoff. The freight is screened, loaded and flown, then recovered at the destination airport for final-mile delivery.

You get an update at each handoff, from pickup to proof of delivery. If a flight is missed or cancelled, the plan moves to the next flight, a charter or a dedicated truck.

AirFreight.com arranges air shipping services across North America, from next flight out and hand carry to air charter, with dedicated ground as backup. You'll work one-on-one with your expediter from start to finish. Tell us what you need to ship, and we'll handle the rest.

Air Shipping Questions Answered

What are air shipping services?

Air shipping services move goods by aircraft, from small parcels to full planeloads of freight. The main options are air express for parcels and documents, air freight on scheduled flights for palletized cargo, deferred air for shipments with flexible dates, hand carry for small critical items, and air charter for freight that needs a whole aircraft. Most shippers use them door to door, with trucks handling pickup and final delivery. The right service depends on the size and weight of the shipment, how soon it must arrive, and whether it can travel on a passenger aircraft or needs a cargo plane.

What is the difference between air express and air freight?

Air express is built for parcels and documents. It moves through a parcel network with set size and weight limits and fixed schedules, and it is priced per package. Air freight is built for larger shipments, such as pallets, crates and machinery, that exceed parcel limits. It flies in the cargo holds of passenger aircraft or on freighters and is priced on chargeable weight. Air freight usually involves more handling at airline terminals, so trucks deliver the freight to the airline before a cutoff and recover it at the destination airport.

What is consolidated air freight?

Consolidated air freight combines shipments from several shippers into one larger load that a forwarder books with an airline. Because the forwarder buys space in bulk, each shipper usually pays less than booking alone. The trade-off is time. Freight waits until the consolidation is built, then is broken down and sorted at the destination before final delivery. Consolidation suits freight with some slack in the schedule. Urgent shipments are usually booked individually on a priority basis, such as next flight out, so they do not wait for other freight.

What is deferred air freight?

Deferred air freight is a lower-cost service where the shipment flies when space is available rather than on a guaranteed flight. Airlines and forwarders use it to fill spare capacity, so the shipper gets a lower rate in exchange for a less certain delivery date. It is still much faster than ocean freight across long distances. Deferred service suits restocking, planned replenishment and other shipments that can arrive a few days later without causing problems. It is the wrong choice for anything tied to a production line, an installation date or a customer deadline.

How is dimensional weight calculated?

Dimensional weight estimates how much an air shipment weighs based on the space it takes up. Measure the length, width and height at the longest points, including the pallet, and multiply them together. For US domestic air freight measured in inches, divide the result by 166 to get dimensional weight in pounds. International shipments often use metric measurements and a divisor of 6,000 cubic centimeters per kilogram. The carrier then bills the higher of dimensional weight and actual weight. Accurate measurements matter, because carriers remeasure freight and correct the charge when the numbers are wrong.

What is chargeable weight?

Chargeable weight is the weight used to price an air shipment. It is the greater of the actual weight on a scale and the dimensional weight calculated from the shipment's size. The rule exists because aircraft run out of space as often as they run out of weight capacity. A light but bulky shipment uses space that could carry heavier freight, so it is charged by its dimensions. A small, dense shipment is charged by what it weighs. Compact packaging and tight palletizing can lower chargeable weight for bulky goods.

What items cannot be shipped by air?

Some dangerous goods are forbidden on all aircraft, and others can only fly on cargo aircraft, not passenger planes. Many more can fly when properly classified, packed, marked, labeled and declared. Items that commonly need special handling include lithium batteries, aerosols, flammable liquids such as paints and solvents, compressed gases, dry ice and magnetized materials. In the United States, the hazardous materials regulations in 49 CFR apply, and most airlines follow the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. The airline or operator decides whether to accept a shipment, so shippers should check before tendering.

Is air freight or ocean freight cheaper?

Ocean freight is far cheaper per pound, which is why most of the world's goods by weight travel by sea. Air freight costs more but moves in hours or days instead of weeks. The comparison changes when time has a cost. Goods held at sea tie up inventory, and a missed delivery date can stop production or lose a sale. High-value items, urgent parts and seasonal goods often fly even though the freight bill is higher. For shipments within North America, the realistic alternative to air is usually a truck rather than a ship.

What is an air waybill?

An air waybill is the shipping document that travels with an air freight shipment. It acts as the contract of carriage between the shipper and the airline and as the receipt for the goods. It lists the shipper, consignee, origin and destination airports, number of pieces, weight, dimensions and a description of the contents, along with any special handling. Each air waybill carries a unique number used to track the shipment. It is not a document of title, so it cannot be used to transfer ownership of the goods the way some ocean bills of lading can.

What is a hand carry or onboard courier service?

A hand carry or onboard courier service sends a person with the shipment on a scheduled passenger flight. The courier checks the item as baggage or carries it on, travels with it, and delivers it in person at the destination. The item never leaves the courier's custody, which suits small, valuable or critical parts such as a circuit board, a medical device or legal documents. Hand carry is limited by airline baggage rules and what one person can manage. It is often faster than freight because it skips cargo cutoffs and terminal handling.

How should freight be packed for air shipping?

Freight for air should be packed to survive several handoffs between trucks, terminals and aircraft. Use sturdy cartons or crates, fill empty space so contents cannot shift, and protect corners and fragile parts. Palletized freight should sit fully on the pallet with no overhang and be strapped or shrink-wrapped as one unit. Mark pieces that cannot be stacked, and add orientation arrows when the freight must stay upright. Label every piece with shipper and consignee details. Packing compactly also helps cost, because bulky packaging raises dimensional weight even when the goods inside are light.
