FOR AIR FREIGHT SHIPPERS

Built for Shippers Who Can't Afford to Wait

Shippers turn to air when the cost of being late beats the cost of the flight. That usually happens without warning. A machine fails, a customer moves a date or a truck shipment stalls halfway.

AirFreight.com is set up for those calls. We book the flight, the aircraft or the courier that meets the deadline and arrange the trucks at both ends. One expediter takes the shipment off your plate and keeps you updated until it is delivered.

The fastest shipments start with a complete handoff. That means the ready time, pickup and delivery addresses, piece count, weights, dimensions and the deadline. With those details, we can price the options and book the right one in a single call.

Here is who ships by air, what it costs them and how to hand over a shipment that's ready to fly.

AIR FREIGHT Icon of a plane flying over boxes

Same Day and Next Day Air Freight

Urgent boxes, crates and pallets fly on the first flight with space or a planned next-day flight. Trucks handle pickup and delivery. Your expediter confirms the cutoff and times the trucks to the flight.

AIR CHARTER Icon of a charter aircraft

Dedicated Air Charter

When the load is large or no flight fits, a whole aircraft flies your freight direct. It leaves when you are ready. We size the aircraft to the load and fly it to the airport closest to the delivery.

URGENT TRUCKING Icon of a truck

Expedited Trucking

When the lane is short or the freight can't fly, a dedicated truck drives it straight to the dock. It often matches air door to door. There are no terminals or transfers, so the freight is handled less and arrives on time.

The common thread

Time or value decides

Shippers choose air when being late would cost more than the flight.

Air freight shippers Who ships by air

Who ships by air, and why

Some industries face that choice more often than others. Aerospace teams ship parts for aircraft on the ground, and automotive plants ship parts to restart a stopped line.

Medical device makers, electronics companies, trade show exhibitors and energy crews also ship by air. The common thread is simple: the value of the goods or the cost of being late outweighs the price of the flight. High-value goods also benefit from fewer handling steps than a long truck route.

AirFreight.com arranges air freight for shippers in each of these industries.

Honest fit

Air pays on long, tight runs

Cutoffs, door limits and a higher cost per pound make air worth it only when the deadline demands it.

Limits The downsides

The honest downsides of air freight

Air freight shippers usually pay more per pound for speed, including the trucking at both ends. This means a shipper gets the most from air when the deadline is tight and the distance is long. Piece size and weight are limited by aircraft doors and decks, so bulky freight may need a freighter or a truck.

Flights have tender cutoffs, and missing one can push freight to the next departure. Weather and missed connections cause delays, and airport handling adds steps at both ends. Dangerous goods face restrictions, and air carries a higher carbon footprint per pound than ground.

Our dispatch team is available around the clock, including weekends and holidays, so you can weigh these trade-offs with us at any hour. AirFreight.com makes sure you choose air only when it pays.

Let the deadline pick

Each faster tier costs more, so book only the speed the deadline needs.

Speed options Choosing speed

Speed options for air freight shippers

When a scheduled booking isn't the right fit for your shipment, a faster tier might be the answer. Same day air puts freight on the first flight that can deliver it the same day. Next flight out books the first departure with space, and scheduled air freight suits pallets with a day or two of slack.

Deferred air costs less but flies when space is available. A hand carrier takes a small critical item on a passenger flight. An air charter books a whole aircraft for freight that nothing scheduled can move in time. Each step up in speed costs more, so the deadline should set the tier.

And when air isn't the right solution, we also offer dedicated ground for shorter runs. AirFreight.com matches the speed option to your deadline and keeps you updated to delivery.

Getting ready Preparation

Getting your shipment ready to fly

Whether your priority is speed, cost or keeping freight safe, a ready shipment remains one of the most reliable ways to make your flight. Start with an accurate quote request that covers origin, destination, pieces, weight, dimensions and the deadline. Add dangerous goods status and whether you need door-to-door or airport-to-airport service.

Pack and palletize for several handoffs, label every piece, and confirm a ready time that meets the tender cutoff. Known shipper status lets freight fly on passenger aircraft as well as freighters, which opens more flights.

AirFreight.com walks shippers through these details before booking. Every shipment is monitored from pickup to drop-off.

US domestic air bills the greater of actual and dimensional weight. Real dimensions keep the price steady.

Pricing Understanding cost

Understanding the price as a shipper

When speed counts but you want a price that holds, accurate details are an excellent option for avoiding surprises. Air freight is charged on chargeable weight, the greater of actual and dimensional weight. For US domestic freight, dimensional weight is length times width times height in inches, divided by 166.

Service speed, distance, pickup and delivery, screening and timing also affect the cost. Quotes change after pickup when freight is reweighed or remeasured, or when a truck waits or has to return. Sending the real dimensions and scale weight keeps the price steady.

It's also the right call for planning, so you know the cost before you commit. AirFreight.com confirms the details with you up front and keeps you informed from pickup to delivery.

Why Cheap Freight Costs More: Mike Pettrey on Trust & Expedited Trucking

On this episode of On Air with AirFreight.com, host Kevin Carpenter sits down with Mike Pettrey, CEO of C&M Transport out of Painesville, Ohio — one of AirFreight.com's most trusted carrier partners and one of the oldest expedite companies in the country, now in its 35th year.

Mike shares how his father founded C&M around fair treatment of drivers and owner-operators, why straight trucks and sprinter vans became the backbone of the expedite industry, and how dedicated capacity mitigates cargo risk that traditional LTL can't. The conversation covers freight rate compression since 1991, the industry's price-driven race to the bottom, why regulatory crackdowns are (in their view) good for carriers who play it straight, and how technology — real-time tracking, proactive delay alerts — is raising the bar for customer transparency without replacing the human judgment calls that keep freight moving safely.

Zero problems, ahead of schedule

My only criticism is that there isn’t an option for more than five stars. I’ve been burned by more hotshot brokers than I can count, and this is the first time I’ve had a shipment show up ahead of schedule with absolutely zero damage or tampering. I could not recommend AirFreight more strongly, we will be using them exclusively going forward. A bit higher priced but frankly inexpensive compared to the problems caused by prior shippers. 11/10, no notes.

Air Freight Shipper Questions Answered

Who ships air freight?

Air freight is shipped by businesses whose goods are valuable, urgent or both. Aerospace companies ship parts for grounded aircraft. Automotive and manufacturing plants ship parts to keep production lines running. Medical device makers, electronics and technology companies, trade show exhibitors and energy and construction firms are also regular air freight shippers. Retailers and e-commerce sellers use air for fast-moving or seasonal goods. What they share is a situation where the cost of a late or damaged shipment is higher than the cost of flying it.

What are the downsides of air freight?

Air freight costs more per pound than truck or ocean freight. Aircraft doors and decks limit how large and heavy a single piece can be. Flights have tender cutoffs, and missing one can mean waiting for the next departure. Weather, airport congestion and missed connections can cause delays, and each airport handoff adds a step where something can go wrong. Some dangerous goods are restricted or forbidden. Air also produces more emissions per pound than ground transport. For many shipments, these trade-offs are worth it, but they are why air works best for urgent or high-value freight.

What is a known shipper?

A known shipper is a business whose identity and legitimacy have been verified under the Transportation Security Administration's air cargo security program. Cargo from a known shipper can be accepted for transport on passenger aircraft, subject to screening rules. Cargo from an unknown shipper is generally limited to all-cargo aircraft. Known shipper status is managed by the airlines and the companies that tender cargo to them. For shippers, it matters because passenger flights offer far more departures than freighters, which can mean faster delivery.

What is chargeable weight?

Chargeable weight is the weight an air shipment is billed on. It is the greater of the actual weight on a scale and the dimensional weight, which is based on the space the freight takes up. For US domestic air freight measured in inches and pounds, dimensional weight is commonly length times width times height divided by 166. Light, bulky freight is charged by its dimensions, while dense freight is charged by actual weight. Compact packaging and accurate measurements help shippers keep chargeable weight, and the final bill, under control.

What is the difference between airport-to-airport and door-to-door air freight?

Airport-to-airport service covers only the flight. The shipper must deliver the freight to the airline's cargo terminal before the cutoff, and the consignee must collect it at the destination airport. Door-to-door service adds trucks for pickup at the shipper's dock and delivery to the consignee. Door-to-door is simpler for most businesses and puts one party in charge of the handoffs. When comparing quotes, check which service is included, because the truck legs can take a large share of the total time.

What is a tender cutoff in air freight?

A tender cutoff is the latest time freight can be delivered to the airline's cargo terminal and still make a particular flight. Cutoffs allow time for acceptance, screening, building pallets and loading the aircraft. They are usually some hours before departure and vary by airline, airport and flight. Freight that arrives after the cutoff waits for a later flight, which can push delivery back by a day. Shippers can help by confirming a realistic ready time so pickup and the drive to the airport fit within the cutoff.

What is the difference between an air freight carrier, a forwarder and a broker?

An air freight carrier is an airline or charter operator that flies the aircraft. A freight forwarder books space with carriers, often consolidates several shippers' freight, and handles international documents. An air freight broker arranges a specific shipment on the shipper's behalf, choosing the flight or charter and booking the trucks at both ends, usually with one contact managing the whole move. Shippers with urgent domestic freight often use a broker, while international importers and exporters often use a forwarder.

Can dangerous goods ship by air?

Many dangerous goods can ship by air when they are properly classified, packed, marked, labeled and declared. Some are forbidden on all aircraft, and others are allowed only on cargo aircraft. In the United States, the hazardous materials regulations apply, and most airlines also follow the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. Common items that need care include lithium batteries, aerosols, paints, adhesives, compressed gases and dry ice. Shippers should share the safety data sheet when asking for a quote, so the shipment can be booked on an aircraft that accepts it.

What is an air waybill?

An air waybill is the shipping document for air freight. It serves as the contract between the shipper and the airline and as the receipt for the goods. It lists the shipper and consignee, the airports, the number of pieces, weight, dimensions and a description of the goods, along with any special handling instructions. Each air waybill has a unique number used to track the shipment. Unlike some ocean bills of lading, it is not a document of title and cannot be used to transfer ownership of the goods.

Do cargo flights only fly at night?

No, but many do. Freighters operated by express and parcel networks often fly overnight so packages collected in the evening can be sorted at a hub and delivered the next morning. Airports also tend to have more capacity at night. Cargo also flies all day in the holds of passenger aircraft, which follow passenger schedules. Charter flights depart whenever the freight and aircraft are ready. For urgent freight, the ability to use daytime passenger flights as well as overnight freighters gives shippers more options.

How does air freight tracking work?

Air freight tracking follows status events tied to the air waybill number. Typical events include acceptance at the cargo terminal, departure, arrival at the destination airport and availability for pickup. Door-to-door shipments add truck pickup and final delivery events. Airlines post these updates to their systems, but the level of detail varies by carrier. Many shippers prefer a single contact who watches the events and calls when something changes, rather than checking several airline systems themselves. Proof of delivery confirms who received the shipment and when.
