Air Freight Services

When a shipment has to make the next flight out, the service you book matters as much as the plane. AirFreight.com arranges scheduled air freight, next flight out, hand carry and air cargo charter across the US and North America. One expeditor matches the service to your deadline and manages it door to door.

What shippers get

A Team That Owns the Shipment

“Todd and his group at Air Freight are the absolute best!” — Svb

“Todd Anderson scheduled an air freight shipment for us in just a few hours.” — Pete

Consistent Service on Every Load

“I have used Air Freight several times and each experience was superb!” — Elsie

AIR FREIGHT SERVICES

Air Freight Services for Every Deadline

Not every air shipment needs the fastest option. Some can wait for a planned flight and save money. Others have hours, not days, and need the first departure, a courier or a whole aircraft. Booking the right tier is half the job.

AirFreight.com arranges all of them, from scheduled air freight to charter, with trucks at both ends. We work across airlines and operators, so the choice follows your deadline instead of one carrier's schedule. Your expeditor quotes the tiers that fit and manages the trip door to door.

Price follows the tier. Scheduled air freight shares the aircraft with other cargo, so it costs the least. Next flight out pays for priority space, and charter pays for the whole aircraft. Knowing the deadline lets us quote the tier that makes it without paying for speed you don't need.

Here is who does what in an air shipment, how the tiers compare and what shapes the price.

Scheduled Air and Next Flight Out

Scheduled air freight is the economical choice when the deadline allows a planned departure. Next flight out puts urgent freight on the first flight with space. Trucks handle both ends. Your expeditor confirms the cutoff and the recovery time before booking, so the delivery truck meets the flight.

Good to know

Air cargo or air freight

Air cargo is what flies, and air freight is the service that moves it door to door.

Services Who does what

Who does what in an air shipment

Several players handle each air shipment. Airlines and freighter operators fly the cargo. Forwarders consolidate shipments and handle international paperwork. An expedite broker books the right flight or aircraft and manages the trip from pickup to delivery.

Air cargo is the freight itself, and air freight is the service of moving it, though most shippers use the terms interchangeably. What matters more is who owns the whole trip, because a flight booked without the ground legs leaves the shipper to arrange them.

AirFreight.com owns the whole trip, flight and ground legs included. Every load is monitored from pickup to delivery.

Four tiers to fly

Scheduled air, next flight out, hand carry or charter. Deadline and size decide the tier.

Tiers Service tiers

Four ways to fly your freight

When your freight can wait for a planned departure, scheduled air freight gives you the most economical way to fly. It travels on passenger and freighter flights with cargo from other shippers, follows the airline's cutoffs and may connect through a hub.

Tighter deadlines call for a faster tier. Next flight out books the first departure with space, so the freight still shares a flight but leaves as soon as possible. Hand carry puts a small critical part in an onboard courier's hands on a passenger flight. An air cargo charter books a whole aircraft that departs when the cargo is ready.

Choose from these four tiers to get your freight where it needs to be. Charter is also the right call for freight too large for shared space, so size can decide the tier as well as the clock. AirFreight.com matches the tier to your deadline and books it for you.

Why it matters

Measure every piece

Accurate dimensions keep the quote close to what the shipment actually bills.

Pricing Chargeable weight

How air freight is priced

Chargeable weight is the figure an air freight price is built on, often higher than the weight on your scale. Airlines bill the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight, which converts a shipment's length, width and height in inches into pounds. A bulky crate of light parts can bill well above what it weighs.

Dense freight such as castings, motors and fasteners usually bills on actual weight. Light, bulky freight such as panels, housings and foam components usually bills on size.

The tier sets most of the rest. Distance, how soon the freight must arrive, pickup and delivery at each end and any special handling all affect the cost. AirFreight.com matches your shipment to the tiers that fit and quotes the whole trip door to door.

Limits Size and limits

What can fly and what limits it

While scheduled flights cost less, a charter is often the only way to fly a piece that will not fit an airline's cargo door. Size is the first limit. Passenger aircraft holds take smaller pieces than freighters, and every piece has to clear the door of the aircraft that carries it.

Hazardous materials such as lithium batteries, paints and some chemicals can fly when they are declared, packed and labeled under dangerous goods rules. Some may travel only on cargo aircraft. High-value and sensitive freight may need special handling, and all cargo is screened for security before departure.

For oversized and heavy freight, a charter provides a balance of size and speed that a truck cannot match over long distances. AirFreight.com checks your dimensions, weight and freight type against each option and arranges the aircraft that can carry it.

One contact

One plan, door to door

Trucks cover both ground legs. A missed flight is rebooked, or a charter or truck takes over.

Door to door Ground legs

The ground legs and the backup plan

Air freight brokers usually manage the whole trip, including the ground legs at each end. A sprinter van, box truck, straight truck or hot shot picks up the freight and delivers it to the airport before the airline's cutoff. At the other end, it is recovered from the cargo terminal and driven to the final address. This means you have one plan to follow whenever a shipment leaves your dock.

Our dispatch team is available around the clock, including weekends and holidays, so you can book a pickup at any hour. If a flight is delayed or misses a connection, the shipment is rebooked on the next flight that works. A charter or a truck takes over when no flight meets the deadline.

AirFreight.com tracks each handoff and calls you when plans change. Every leg is monitored from pickup to delivery.

Let the deadline decide

The right service is the least costly one that still meets your deadline.

Air or ground When ground wins

When a truck is the faster answer

Skip the airport when the road is faster. We arrange a dedicated truck that drives your freight straight to the receiver when that beats the flight.

On shorter distances, the steps around a flight add up, from the airport drive and cutoff to screening and recovery. A truck that leaves your dock right away skips them, which saves time and removes the risk of a missed connection. Freight that misses the last flight of the day often moves better by road, too. Over long distances, air still wins.

AirFreight.com quotes air and ground side by side and tells you which one meets the deadline. Your shipment stays with one expeditor from the first call to final delivery. Get in touch with our expeditors to get a quote for your freight.

Air Freight Services Questions Answered

What is the difference between air cargo and air freight?

Air cargo refers to the goods carried on an aircraft, apart from passengers and their baggage. Air freight usually refers to the service of shipping those goods by air, and sometimes to the charge for it. In practice, most shippers, airlines and brokers use the two terms interchangeably. Some people use air cargo for freight in the holds of passenger aircraft and air freight for freight on dedicated freighters, but there is no fixed industry rule. What matters more to a shipper is the service level, the aircraft and whether a price covers only the flight or the whole trip from pickup to delivery.

What is the difference between an airline, a freight forwarder and an air freight broker?

An airline or freighter operator owns and flies the aircraft. It sells space on scheduled flights, usually from one airport's cargo terminal to another, or charters out a whole aircraft. A freight forwarder buys that space, consolidates shipments from many customers and often handles international documents and customs. An air freight broker arranges the shipment for the shipper, matching it to the right flight or aircraft and managing the trucks at each end. A broker does not own aircraft. Its job is to own the whole trip, from pickup to delivery, and to find another flight, a charter or a truck when the first plan fails.

What is next flight out service?

Next flight out is an expedited service that books a shipment on the first scheduled flight with space between two airports. The freight still shares a commercial flight with other cargo, so it costs far less than a charter, but it is booked for the earliest departure rather than the most economical one. A truck or courier collects the freight and gets it to the airline's cargo terminal before the cutoff, and another vehicle recovers it at the destination airport for final delivery. It suits replacement parts, tooling, medical items and other small to mid-sized shipments that need to arrive as soon as possible.

What is hand carry service?

Hand carry, also called onboard courier service, puts a shipment in the care of a courier who travels with it on a passenger flight. The item goes as carry-on or checked baggage, and the courier collects it on arrival and delivers it in person. Because the item never leaves the courier's custody, hand carry suits small, critical or high-value pieces such as aircraft parts, circuit boards, medical devices and legal documents. Size and weight are limited by airline baggage rules, and hazardous materials are restricted. For anything larger, next flight out or a charter is the usual alternative.

What is an air cargo charter?

An air cargo charter books an entire aircraft for one shipment. The aircraft departs when the cargo is ready, flies directly to the airport closest to the destination and can use smaller airfields that scheduled flights do not serve. Charter aircraft range from light turboprops that carry a few pieces to wide-body freighters with nose doors for oversized freight. A charter costs considerably more than scheduled air freight, because the shipper pays for the whole aircraft. It is used when no scheduled flight meets the deadline, when the freight is too large for shared space, or when a route has no direct service.

What is chargeable weight in air freight?

Chargeable weight is the weight an airline bills, and it is the greater of the shipment's actual weight and its dimensional weight. Dimensional weight reflects the space the freight takes up in the aircraft. To find it in US units, multiply length, width and height in inches and divide by the airline's dim factor. A divisor of 166 is common for domestic air cargo, matching the international standard of 6,000 cubic centimeters per kilogram. A pallet measuring 48 by 40 by 36 inches has 69,120 cubic inches, or about 416 pounds of dimensional weight. If that pallet weighs 300 pounds, it bills at about 416 pounds.

What is an air waybill?

An air waybill is the shipping document for freight that travels by air. It serves as the contract of carriage between the shipper and the airline, as a receipt showing the airline accepted the goods, and as a record of the shipment's details. It lists the shipper and consignee, the origin and destination airports, the number of pieces, the weight, a description of the goods and any special handling. Each air waybill carries a unique number that is used to track the shipment. Unlike an ocean bill of lading, an air waybill is not a document of title, so it cannot be traded to transfer ownership of the goods.

Can hazardous materials ship by air?

Many hazardous materials can fly, provided they meet dangerous goods rules. In the United States, the Department of Transportation and the FAA regulate them, and airlines also apply the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. The shipper must classify the material, use approved packaging, mark and label each package and sign a shipper's declaration. Some materials are allowed only on cargo aircraft, some have per-package limits and some are forbidden in the air entirely. Lithium batteries, aerosols, paints, flammable liquids and certain chemicals are common examples. Declaring them up front matters, because the hazard decides which flights, aircraft and couriers can carry the shipment.

Do cargo flights operate at night?

Many cargo flights do operate at night. Freighter networks often fly overnight so freight picked up in the afternoon can be sorted and delivered the next morning, and night departures avoid daytime congestion at busy airports. Cargo also flies during the day, in the holds of passenger aircraft and on charters that depart when the freight is ready. Some airports restrict night operations to limit noise, with curfews or limits on late departures and arrivals. Those rules can affect when a charter can land or take off, so they are worth checking for any time-critical flight into a smaller or urban airport.

Which industries use air freight?

Air freight serves industries where time or value outweighs the cost of shipping. Aerospace companies fly replacement parts for grounded aircraft. Manufacturers and automotive plants ship parts to keep production lines running. Healthcare and life sciences companies move medical devices, samples and pharmaceuticals. Electronics and technology firms ship high-value components. Energy, oil and gas, and construction projects fly critical equipment to remote sites. Retailers fly inventory to meet launch dates and seasonal peaks. The common thread is a shipment whose delay would cost far more than the flight, which is why many of these shippers keep an air freight provider on call.
