AIR CARGO SERVICES

An Air Cargo Shipping Company Built for Deadlines

Some air cargo can wait for the cheapest flight next week. Ours usually can't. Shippers call AirFreight.com when a production line is down, a project site is waiting or a customer needs the part tomorrow. They need cargo on a plane today.

We work as a broker, so we're not tied to one airline or one aircraft type. We book scheduled flights, charter whole aircraft and put couriers on passenger flights. Then we pick the airport and the truck that get your cargo there fastest, with one expediter on the shipment from the first call to proof of delivery.

Most of what we move is too big or too urgent for a parcel network. Think crated machine parts, pallets of components, medical equipment and trade show freight. We check the dimensions, the weight and any dangerous goods rules up front, so the cargo is accepted at the airline counter the first time.

Tell us what you're shipping and when it has to land. We'll lay out the options and the timeline before you book.

Dedicated Cargo Aircraft

When cargo is too big, too hazardous or too urgent for a scheduled flight, a chartered aircraft flies it direct. We source the right size of plane, from a turboprop to a wide-body freighter. It departs when your cargo is ready. The aircraft carries nothing but your shipment, so there are no connections and no other freight to wait on.

Same Day and Next Day Air Cargo

Most urgent cargo flies on scheduled passenger and freighter flights. We book next flight out for same-day moves and planned next-day flights when there is a little more time. Trucks pick up and deliver at both ends. We pick the flight by cutoff and arrival time, not by airline. If the first option fills up, a backup is already lined up.

HAND CARRY EF Icon

Hand Carry Couriers

A courier carries a small critical shipment on the next passenger flight and delivers it in person. The item stays in their custody the whole way, with no cargo handling. It is the fastest way to move a part or device across the country. Customs paperwork for cross-border trips is prepared before the courier leaves for the airport.

In short

The flight is one step

A good air cargo company handles every handoff between your dock and the delivery address.

Air cargo shipping What it handles

What an air cargo shipping company handles

Hand off the whole shipment, not just the flight. We quote, book and manage air cargo from your dock to the delivery address. An air cargo shipping company starts with the quote and the booking on the right flight or aircraft.

It then arranges truck pickup, tender and screening before the cutoff, and the flight itself. At the other end, it covers recovery at the destination airport, final-mile delivery and proof of delivery. The air waybill and any dangerous goods paperwork travel with the freight.

AirFreight.com handles every one of these steps, so nothing falls between two companies.

Cargo types What flies

What kinds of cargo fly, and what each needs

An air cargo shipping company usually handles a wide mix of freight, including machinery parts, electronics, medical devices and dangerous goods. This means each shipment needs the right preparation whenever it is booked. Machinery and replacement parts need crating and an accurate weight for each piece.

Electronics and high-value goods benefit from fewer handoffs and close tracking. Medical devices often have fixed delivery windows. Dangerous goods need classification and a declaration, and some may fly only on cargo aircraft. Oversized pieces need a freighter or a charter. Perishables and live animals need specialist carriers with temperature control or animal handling.

Our dispatch team is available around the clock, including weekends and holidays, so you can book air cargo at any hour. AirFreight.com makes sure each shipment is booked on an aircraft that accepts it.

Globe with transport routes
Plan for both

Big hubs and small airports

Major gateways move volume, while smaller airports bring urgent cargo closer to the site.

Gateways Gateway airports

Why gateway airports matter

When a major hub isn't the right fit for your shipment, a smaller airport might be the answer. The busiest US cargo airports serve as hubs for integrators and freighter airlines. They handle huge volumes and connect to flights across the country and overseas.

Choose from major cargo gateways, regional airports and smaller airfields to get your cargo where it needs to be. A smaller airport near the delivery can shorten the truck leg and save hours on urgent freight. A good air cargo shipping company plans around both.

And when a scheduled flight isn't the right solution, we also offer charter aircraft that land closer to the site. AirFreight.com picks the airports that get your cargo there fastest.

Each handoff counts

Time is won or lost at pickup, the cutoff, recovery and final delivery.

Door to door A next flight out shipment

A next flight out shipment, door to door

Whether your priority is speed, cost or a safe arrival, next flight out remains one of the most practical ways to move urgent cargo. It starts with the booking, including dimensions, weight and the deadline. A truck picks up at your dock and delivers the cargo to the airline before the cutoff.

The cargo is screened, loaded and flown, then recovered at the destination airport. Final-mile delivery takes it to the consignee, with an update at each handoff. Cargo that is ready at pickup speeds things up, while late ready times and missing paperwork slow them down.

AirFreight.com coordinates each handoff on next flight out shipments. Every shipment is monitored from pickup to drop-off.

First time customer

First time customer. Communication was fantastic throughout the entire process and is sincerely appreciated. Our customer shared an update this morning that the driver texted a little before 5 am that he would be there at 8. That’s exactly when he pulled in. She said it was a much easier process than she ever thought it would be and was very grateful.

Zero problems, ahead of schedule

My only criticism is that there isn’t an option for more than five stars. I’ve been burned by more hotshot brokers than I can count, and this is the first time I’ve had a shipment show up ahead of schedule with absolutely zero damage or tampering. I could not recommend AirFreight more strongly, we will be using them exclusively going forward. A bit higher priced but frankly inexpensive compared to the problems caused by prior shippers. 11/10, no notes.

Air Cargo Shipping Questions Answered

What does an air cargo shipping company do?

An air cargo shipping company arranges the movement of freight by air from the shipper to the consignee. Depending on the company, that can include quoting, booking space on a flight or chartering an aircraft, arranging truck pickup and delivery, preparing the air waybill and other paperwork, tendering the cargo for screening, tracking the flight and handling recovery at the destination airport. Some companies fly their own aircraft, while brokers and forwarders arrange flights with airlines and operators. The best fit depends on the cargo, the route and the deadline.

What is belly cargo?

Belly cargo is freight carried in the lower holds of passenger aircraft, beneath the cabin. Because passenger flights are frequent, belly cargo offers many departures and connections, which helps urgent shipments. The trade-offs are size and security limits: pieces must fit the hold doors and space, and cargo must be screened and come from a known shipper. Larger pieces and some dangerous goods need a freighter instead. A large share of the world's air cargo travels as belly cargo on passenger flights.

What is a cargo gateway airport?

A cargo gateway airport is a major airport that handles large volumes of freight and connects many cargo routes. Gateways serve as hubs for express networks and freighter airlines, with dedicated cargo terminals, sorting facilities and handling equipment. In North America, airports such as Anchorage, Louisville, Miami and Memphis handle millions of metric tons a year. Shippers do not always need a gateway, though. Smaller airports close to a plant or job site can shorten the truck leg for urgent freight, especially on charter flights.

What is next flight out?

Next flight out is a service that books cargo on the first scheduled flight with available space between two airports. A truck collects the cargo and delivers it to the airline before the cutoff, and another truck recovers and delivers it at the destination. It is one of the fastest scheduled options and costs far less than a charter. It depends on airline schedules, cutoffs and space, so when flights are full or none meets the deadline, a charter or hand carrier may be the better choice.

What is a dangerous goods declaration?

A dangerous goods declaration is a document the shipper completes to describe hazardous materials in an air shipment. It lists the proper shipping name, class, identification number, packing group, quantity and packaging, and it confirms the shipment has been prepared according to the rules. Airlines require it before accepting dangerous goods, and the person completing it must be trained. In the United States, the hazardous materials regulations apply, and most airlines also follow IATA rules. Errors on the declaration are a common reason cargo is held or refused.

What is a known shipper?

A known shipper is a business whose identity has been verified under the Transportation Security Administration's air cargo security program. Cargo from a known shipper can be accepted on passenger aircraft, subject to screening, while cargo from an unknown shipper is generally limited to all-cargo aircraft. Known shipper status is managed by the airlines and the companies that tender cargo to them. It matters because passenger flights offer many more departures than freighters, which can mean faster delivery for urgent cargo.

What is an air waybill?

An air waybill is the main shipping document for air cargo. It acts as the contract between the shipper and the airline and as a receipt for the goods. It lists the shipper and consignee, the airports, the number of pieces, weight, dimensions and contents, along with any special handling instructions. Each air waybill has a unique number used to track the shipment. Unlike some ocean bills of lading, it is not a document of title and cannot be used to transfer ownership of the cargo.

What is the difference between express and standard air freight?

Express air freight gets priority booking and loading on the first suitable flight, with fewer handling steps and tighter cutoffs. Standard air freight takes space as it becomes available, which can add a day or more. Express costs more per pound, while standard air freight suits shipments with some slack in the schedule. For parcels, express usually means a parcel network's fastest service. For larger freight, express options include next flight out and same day air, which use the first flights that fit the deadline.

What is air cargo screening?

Air cargo screening is the security inspection of freight before it is loaded onto an aircraft. In the United States, all cargo carried on passenger aircraft must be screened under Transportation Security Administration rules. Screening can use X-ray, explosives trace detection, physical inspection or other approved methods. It may happen at the airline, at a certified screening facility before the cargo reaches the airport, or at the shipper's own certified facility. Accurate descriptions and packaging that can be inspected help screening go quickly.

What are the weight and size limits for air cargo?

Limits depend on the aircraft and the route. Passenger aircraft holds take pieces up to a modest height and size that fit their doors. Main-deck freighters take full pallets and large crates through wide side doors, and some freighters have nose doors for long items. The largest freighters carry very heavy loads and outsize pieces. Floor loading limits also cap how much weight one piece can put on the aircraft floor. Sharing every piece's dimensions and weight lets the right aircraft be chosen before booking.

When should a cargo plane be chartered?

A cargo charter makes sense when no scheduled flight meets the deadline, when the cargo is too large or heavy for scheduled aircraft, or when it needs to reach an airport that scheduled freighters do not serve. Charters are also used when a late arrival would cost more than the aircraft, such as a stopped production line or a grounded airliner. The shipper gets the whole aircraft, which departs when the cargo is ready and flies direct. Matching the aircraft size to the cargo keeps the cost in line with the need.
