AIR CARGO DELIVERY SERVICES

Air Cargo Delivered to the Door, Not Just the Airport

A fast flight is only part of a delivery. Somebody has to get the cargo to the airline before the cutoff and get it off the ramp at the other end. Those two truck legs are where most urgent shipments lose time.

AirFreight.com books the flight and both truck legs as one job. One expediter watches every handoff, from pickup at your dock to the signature at delivery, and tells you right away if anything changes.

Final-mile delivery is where details matter most. Some receivers need a liftgate, an appointment or inside delivery. Others are a hospital loading dock or a job site with no forklift. We find out before the flight leaves, so the truck that meets it has the right equipment.

Here is what door-to-door covers and how to choose the right service level.

Same Day and Next Day Delivery

Cargo flies on the first flight with space or a planned next-day flight. Pickup and final-mile delivery are booked with it, so nothing waits at the airport. Your expediter confirms the arrival time and the recovery before the freight leaves your dock.

Charter Delivery

When no scheduled flight can deliver in time, a chartered aircraft flies the cargo direct to the airport closest to the consignee. A truck waits at the ramp, so the cargo goes straight to the delivery address.

Air cargo delivery Door to door

What air cargo delivery covers

Door to door means a truck picks up at your dock, the cargo flies, and another truck delivers it to the consignee. Airport-to-airport service covers only the flight.

With airport-to-airport service, the shipper must get the cargo to the airline before the cutoff and collect it at the destination airport. Most urgent shipments need door to door, because one party then manages every handoff.

AirFreight.com handles every one of those handoffs for you. Every shipment is monitored from pickup to delivery.

Rule of thumb

Let the deadline decide

Same day air, next flight out, next-day air, deferred or charter. Each trades cost for speed.

Service levels Choosing a level

Choosing the service level

Next flight out sits between same day air and next-day air freight, faster than overnight but less certain than a same-day booking. Same day air builds the move around flights that can deliver today. Next-day air freight suits pallets planned a day ahead, and deferred air costs least.

An air charter books a whole aircraft for cargo that no scheduled flight can deliver in time. Each level trades cost for speed, and the deadline should decide which one fits.

We match the service level to your delivery deadline before booking. AirFreight.com arranges every level across North America and keeps you updated to delivery.

Where time goes

The ground legs

Pickup, cutoffs, recovery and final delivery decide more of the timing than the flight.

The steps Dock to dock

Each step from dock to dock

While the flight is the fastest part of the trip, the steps on the ground often decide whether cargo arrives on time. It starts with the booking, then pickup and delivery to the airline before the tender cutoff. Screening and build-up follow, then the flight.

At the destination, the cargo is broken down and recovered, then delivered on the final mile with proof of delivery. Delays come from late ready times, missed cutoffs, connections, recovery waits and missing delivery details.

This makes planning the ground legs a practical part of every air cargo delivery. AirFreight.com coordinates each step and keeps you informed from pickup to delivery.

Aircraft cargo hold
Good to know

Most cargo flies as is

Declared dangerous goods have limits. A hand carrier can fly a small part as baggage.

What flies Rules and hand carry

What can fly, and flying cargo as a passenger

When a scheduled flight isn't the right fit for your cargo, another option might be the answer. Most general cargo flies without special handling. Dangerous goods fly when declared, though some are limited to cargo aircraft and a few are forbidden on all aircraft.

Oversized pieces need a freighter or a charter. For a small critical item, a hand carrier can fly with it as a passenger, carrying it as baggage and delivering it in person. That keeps the item in one person's custody the whole way.

And when air isn't the right solution, we also offer dedicated ground for freight that cannot fly. AirFreight.com books your cargo on a flight or vehicle that will accept it.

How Supreme Court Ruling Is Reshaping Final Mile Risk Management

In this episode of On Air with Airfreight.com, host Kevin Carpenter sits down with Bryan Ice, a certified insurance counselor and co-founder of B3, a specialized insurance and risk management program built for final mile, same-day, courier, and customized delivery.

Bryan shares how B3 got its start, why final mile has always been a misunderstood niche for insurers, and what the recent Supreme Court ruling in Montgomery v. Carib Transport means for freight brokers and motor carriers going forward. We also get into how COVID reshaped final mile delivery for good, why thin-margin operators are headed for trouble, and how B3 is building a driver grading system to raise the bar on vetting.

Air Cargo Delivery Questions Answered

What is air cargo delivery?

Air cargo delivery is the process of moving goods by air from a shipper to a consignee. Door-to-door delivery includes a truck pickup at the shipper's dock, the flight, recovery at the destination airport and final-mile delivery to the consignee's address. Airport-to-airport delivery covers only the flight, leaving the trucking to the shipper and consignee. Air cargo delivery is used for urgent and high-value goods, such as production parts, medical devices and electronics, where speed matters more than the lowest freight cost.

What is door-to-door air freight?

Door-to-door air freight is a service that covers the whole trip, from pickup at the shipper's location to delivery at the consignee's location. It includes the truck to the origin airport, tender and screening, the flight, recovery at the destination airport and final-mile delivery. One provider manages every handoff, which simplifies urgent shipments and reduces the chance of something being missed. It costs more than airport-to-airport service but saves the shipper from arranging and coordinating the truck legs separately. For most urgent shipments, the time saved by having one party plan every leg outweighs the extra cost.

What is recovery at the airport?

Recovery is the step where cargo is collected from the airline's terminal at the destination airport after the flight. Once the cargo is unloaded and broken down from its pallet or container, the airline makes it available for pickup, and a truck or courier recovers it for delivery. Recovery timing depends on how quickly the airline processes arriving cargo and on terminal hours. Having a truck ready at the destination as soon as the cargo is available saves time on urgent shipments.

What is final-mile delivery?

Final-mile delivery is the last leg of a shipment, from the destination airport or terminal to the consignee's door. For air cargo, it usually means a truck or van picking up the cargo after recovery and delivering it to a business, job site or home. Final-mile delivery may include services such as liftgate delivery, inside delivery or a scheduled appointment. It is often where delays happen, so confirming the delivery address, hours and an on-site contact before shipping keeps the last step on time.

How is chargeable weight calculated?

Chargeable weight is the greater of a shipment's actual weight and its dimensional weight. Dimensional weight is found by multiplying the length, width and height of each piece and dividing by a set factor, commonly 166 for US domestic shipments measured in inches and pounds. For example, a 24 by 18 by 18 inch box is about 47 pounds dimensional, so a 20-pound box of that size is charged as 47 pounds. Dense freight, such as a heavy pallet, is usually charged at its actual weight.

What is the difference between air freight, air express and air mail?

Air freight usually means commercial cargo, such as pallets and crates, shipped by air with trucks handling pickup and delivery. Air express refers to fast parcel and document services, often from integrators, with strict size and weight limits and door-to-door delivery through sorting hubs. Air mail is mail carried by air under postal services. The three often travel on the same aircraft but are handled through different systems, with different rules, limits and prices for shippers. Knowing which one a shipment needs helps a shipper choose the right service and compare quotes fairly.

Can a person fly cargo as a passenger?

In a sense, yes. An onboard courier, also called a hand carrier, travels on a scheduled passenger flight with a shipment and delivers it in person. The item goes as checked baggage or carry-on, so it stays in the courier's custody throughout. This suits small, critical items such as electronic parts, medical devices or documents. Airline baggage and security rules apply, and some items, such as many dangerous goods, cannot travel this way. Larger cargo must be shipped as air freight instead.

What is a liftgate?

A liftgate is a powered platform at the back of a truck that raises and lowers cargo between the ground and the truck bed. It is needed when the pickup or delivery site has no loading dock or forklift, such as many offices, stores and job sites. Box trucks and straight trucks often have liftgates. When booking air cargo delivery, saying whether each site has a dock helps the right truck be sent for the final mile, avoiding a failed delivery attempt.

What is proof of delivery?

Proof of delivery is the record confirming a shipment arrived. It usually includes the name of the person who received the cargo, the date and time, and sometimes a signature, photo or notes about the cargo's condition. For urgent air cargo, proof of delivery is often sent right after delivery so the shipper knows the job is complete. It also protects both sides if questions come up later. Any damage or missing pieces should be noted on the delivery paperwork at the time of delivery.

What is next flight out?

Next flight out is a service that books cargo on the first scheduled flight with available space between two airports. A truck collects the cargo and delivers it to the airline before the tender cutoff, and another truck recovers and delivers it at the destination. It is one of the fastest scheduled options for air cargo delivery and costs far less than chartering an aircraft. When flights are full or none meets the deadline, a charter or hand carrier may be needed instead.

What is inside delivery?

Inside delivery means the driver brings the cargo inside the consignee's building, beyond the front door or loading dock, rather than leaving it at the entrance or on the dock. It is useful for offices, labs, hospitals and stores without a receiving dock, or when the cargo must reach a specific room. Inside delivery usually needs to be requested in advance, because it takes more time and may need extra help or equipment. Describing the delivery site when booking helps the right service be arranged.
